PDP defections continue as former spokesman Ologbondiyan officially leaves party

Former PDP spokesman Kola Ologbondiyan resigns, deepening the PDP crisis as internal tensions and nationwide defections reshape Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of 2027

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been hit with yet another high-profile resignation as former National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, announces his formal exit from the party.

His departure comes at a time when the PDP is battling one of its most challenging political moments, marked by internal rifts, leadership disputes, and a wave of defections that have significantly altered its national influence.

Ologbondiyan disclosed his resignation through a personal statement issued on Saturday, December 6, 2025.

Attached to his announcement was a letter dated December 5, addressed to the chairman of Okekoko Ward 09 in Kabba Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State.

The letter, titled “Notification of Membership Withdrawal,” explained that his decision followed an extensive self-assessment of his contributions, experiences, and alignment with the current direction of the PDP.

In the letter, he wrote that after “a deep, personal review of my engagement in the party,” he concluded it was time to move on.

He did not disclose whether he would join another political platform immediately but emphasized that the decision was not impulsive.

Ologbondiyan stated that the step was necessary for his personal convictions and long-term political goals.

He expressed appreciation to leaders and stakeholders within the party, acknowledging the trust placed in him during his years of service.

Ologbondiyan noted that his journey in the PDP provided him with opportunities to serve both the party and the country, and he remains grateful for those experiences.

His tone was reflective, suggesting that the decision was difficult yet unavoidable.

His exit adds to the growing list of political figures distancing themselves from the PDP, signaling deeper instability within the once-dominant party.

The year 2025 has been especially turbulent, with the PDP struggling to maintain cohesion amid widespread dissatisfaction and a shifting political climate ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Across the country, state chapters of the PDP have experienced notable fractures. At the center of the turmoil are unresolved leadership disputes, competing internal interests, and disagreements over the party’s strategic direction.

These issues have emboldened rival parties—especially the All Progressives Congress (APC)—to intensify recruitment efforts, resulting in a surge of defections across various political levels.

Perhaps the most visible sign of the PDP’s crisis has been the departure of several governors who once formed the backbone of the party’s national presence.

In recent months, governors Ademola Adeleke of Osun State, Douye Diri of Bayelsa, Peter Mbah of Enugu, Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta, and Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom all defected to the APC.

Many of these governors cited concerns about the party’s weakening national structure and the need to align with the federal government in order to secure developmental leverage for their states.

In one of the most dramatic political moves of the year, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar resigned from the PDP in July 2025.

Atiku, who had contested the presidency multiple times under the party, accused the PDP of straying from the ideals upon which it was founded.

He later joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition, prompting discussions about a possible major opposition realignment ahead of the 2027 election cycle.

The chain reaction continued as other influential figures followed suit. Dino Melaye, a former senator and prominent political voice, left the PDP after publicly criticizing what he described as the party’s weakened internal democracy and unclear strategic direction.

He joined the ADC shortly after. Likewise, Ifeanyi Okowa, former Delta State governor and 2023 PDP vice-presidential candidate, exited the party and joined the APC.

Legislatures at state and federal levels have also witnessed dramatic shifts. In Rivers State, sixteen members of the House of Assembly defected to the APC following prolonged internal conflicts within the PDP’s state structure.

Similar defections were recorded in Kaduna, Niger, and Katsina states, contributing to the perception of a widening leadership vacuum within the PDP.

The departure of Senator Ned Nwoko, who resigned and joined the APC toward the end of the year, further highlighted the party’s growing challenges.

Against this backdrop of steady political erosion, Ologbondiyan’s resignation carries both symbolic and strategic weight. As a former National Publicity Secretary, he was a significant voice in articulating the party’s positions during some of its most consequential political battles.

His exit not only points to personal disillusionment but also mirrors a broader discontent among senior party members who feel the PDP has lost direction, coherence, and ideological clarity.
