The Oyo Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a suspect in connection with a violent confrontation that resulted in the death of a young man in Lalupon, a community in Lagelu Local Government Area of Oyo State.
The incident, which has drawn concern among residents, occurred in the Asalu area of the town and involved a group of youths whose disagreement escalated into violence.
Authorities identified the deceased as Kehinde, popularly known within the community as “Ogo Ojigbo.”
According to police officials, he sustained serious injuries during the altercation and later died despite efforts to save his life at a nearby hospital.
In a statement issued by the Public Relations Officer of the command, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, the Oyo Police explained that the incident was first reported by community leaders who were alerted by local security guards during the night.
The guards reportedly noticed a confrontation involving several youths in the neighborhood and quickly informed the community authorities.
The community leaders immediately contacted the Iyana-Offa Police Division to report the situation and seek intervention.
The report prompted a rapid response from officers stationed in the area, who mobilized to the location to assess the situation and prevent further violence.
Preliminary findings by the Oyo Police revealed that the confrontation had already caused injuries before security operatives arrived at the scene.
Some of the injured individuals were quickly transported to Ojo Oluwa Hospital in Iyana-Offa for urgent medical treatment.
Medical personnel attempted to stabilize the victims, but Kehinde later died due to the severity of the injuries he sustained during the clash.
His death has since sparked concern among residents of the Lalupon community, many of whom are calling for stronger measures to prevent youth-related violence.
Police operatives led by the Divisional Police Officer of the Iyana-Offa Division visited both the scene of the incident and the hospital where the victims were taken.
During the operation, investigators gathered evidence, documented the situation, and took photographs to support the ongoing investigation.
One suspect identified as Giwa Sodiq was subsequently arrested in connection with the case.
According to officials, the suspect is currently in police custody and assisting investigators as they work to uncover the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
The Oyo Police further disclosed that several other individuals believed to have participated in the confrontation fled the scene before security operatives arrived.
Law enforcement authorities have therefore launched a search operation to track down and apprehend those still at large.
Meanwhile, the body of the deceased has been deposited at the Adeoyo State Hospital morgue in Ring Road, Ibadan.
Medical authorities are expected to conduct an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death and provide additional details that could aid the investigation.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Femi Haruna, commended officers who responded swiftly to the emergency report.
He noted that their prompt action helped restore calm in the area and prevented the situation from escalating further.
