Oshiomhole defends Okpebholo’s achievements in Edo, counters PDP claims, highlights infrastructure, education reforms, and federal projects.
Senator Adams Oshiomhole has once again defended Okpebholo against claims by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that Governor Monday Okpebholo’s first year in office was unproductive.

Speaking to journalists in Benin City, Oshiomhole challenged the credibility of the opposition, insisting that their criticisms lack substance and are disconnected from the real developments occurring across Edo State.
The senator urged the media to focus on verifiable events rather than amplifying “political narratives” from what he described as a party in decline.
According to Oshiomhole, Edo State under the PDP had suffered years of neglect, with government activities often limited to ceremonial groundbreaking events that yielded little tangible progress.
By contrast, he argued, Governor Okpebholo inherited a state plagued by dilapidated infrastructure, underfunded schools, and unsettled traditional disputes, yet has managed to initiate meaningful reforms in a short period.
One of the most visible projects, Oshiomhole pointed out, is the ongoing Ramat Park flyover, aimed at reducing traffic congestion along one of Benin City’s busiest corridors.
He highlighted the project’s potential economic impact, noting that reduced travel time and lower fuel consumption directly benefit commuters and businesses alike.
“The flyover is not just an infrastructure project; it is a lifeline for the people of Edo,” he said, stressing that the initiative represents serious planning rather than political showmanship.
Oshiomhole also addressed the state of public schools, accusing the previous administration of neglect.
Many schools, he explained, were understaffed and structurally compromised, creating poor learning conditions for students.
He praised Governor Okpebholo’s efforts to rehabilitate these schools, providing improved facilities and a conducive learning environment.
“Anyone visiting Edo’s schools today can see that genuine transformation is underway,” he said.
Higher institutions have also benefited from the new administration’s interventions. Both Ambrose Alli University and Edo University, Iyamho, have received restored or expanded subventions, helping to stabilise institutions that were previously affected by frequent industrial crises.
Oshiomhole emphasised that these measures reflect a government focused on long-term solutions rather than short-term publicity.
The senator further criticised the PDP for creating unnecessary tension within the Benin Kingdom during its tenure.
He alleged that attempts to elevate certain dukes to kings and impose traditional rulers without due process disrupted longstanding cultural norms.
He expressed satisfaction that Governor Okpebholo has resolved these disputes and restored harmony, showing respect for Edo’s traditional institutions.
On the federal level, Oshiomhole reiterated his commitment to advancing Edo State’s interests in the National Assembly.
He cited the Benin–Auchi–Okene road as a critical project, noting that it had deteriorated so severely that motorists were often stranded for hours.
He recalled filing his first Senate motion to urge urgent intervention and working alongside Senator Monday Okpebholo to press President Bola Tinubu for alternative funding beyond the annual budget.
The road, he said, is now under reconstruction, underscoring his continued focus on essential federal projects.
Throughout the discussion, Oshiomhole stressed that defending Okpebholo is not merely political rhetoric but an effort to ensure accurate reporting on Edo State governance.
He maintained that the administration’s achievements—ranging from road construction to educational reforms and traditional dispute resolution—are verifiable and impactful. In his view, opposition criticisms should not overshadow the real progress unfolding in communities across the state.
He also highlighted other ongoing roadworks across Edo, arguing that these projects demonstrate the government’s commitment to infrastructure development rather than partisan optics.
By pointing to multiple construction sites in various local government areas, he reinforced the notion that Edo is witnessing a tangible transformation.
On education, Oshiomhole reiterated that schools across the state are now better equipped, staffed, and maintained.
He stressed that improving learning conditions for pupils and students is a priority for Governor Okpebholo, and that these reforms have already begun to yield positive results.
At the tertiary level, the renewed financial support has brought stability and confidence back to institutions that had been struggling for years.
Revisiting the PDP’s legacy, Oshiomhole insisted that the party’s claims of effective governance are exaggerated.
He argued that during its administration, the party failed to initiate sustainable projects and focused more on ceremonies than results.
In contrast, the Okpebholo administration, he said, has combined vision with execution, prioritising projects that directly impact the quality of life for Edo residents.
Finally, Oshiomhole expressed optimism about the trajectory of Edo State governance. He reiterated that defending Okpebholo is about holding the opposition accountable while highlighting real achievements.
He encouraged the media to prioritise evidence-based reporting and promised continued advocacy for Edo’s development, both at the state and federal levels.
By the end of his statement, it was clear that Oshiomhole defends Okpebholo not only as a political ally but as a supporter of transformative governance that addresses the immediate needs and long-term growth of Edo State.
From infrastructure and education to federal intervention projects, the former governor stressed that the state is on a path of measurable progress, contrasting sharply with the previous administration’s legacy.
