Okobi Super Falcons return sparks joy ahead of Cameroon friendlies

The Okobi Super Falcons return has generated excitement after experienced midfielder Ngozi Okobi-Okeoghene was recalled to Nigeria’s women’s national team for upcoming international friendlies against Cameroon, marking her first appearance in the squad after several years away.

The 32-year-old was named in a 25-player list released by Super Falcons head coach Justine Madugu for a double-header against the Indomitable Lionesses.

Reacting to the call-up, Okobi publicly expressed gratitude, writing on social media, “God be praised. Thank you @thenff,” a message that reflected both relief and renewed motivation following her long wait for another opportunity.

The Okobi Super Falcons return comes after a challenging period in her international career.

Despite being a regular figure for Nigeria at the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, where her composure and experience stood out, she was surprisingly omitted from the squad to the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup by former head coach Randy Waldrum. That decision effectively sidelined her from the national setup until now.

Currently playing her club football with Canadian outfit Ottawa Rapid, Okobi has remained consistent and competitive, keeping herself ready for international duty.

Her recall is widely viewed as a reward for perseverance and professionalism, while also offering the Super Falcons additional experience in midfield ahead of future tournaments.

Speaking on her comeback, a source close to the team noted that Okobi’s presence “adds leadership, calmness, and tactical discipline to the squad,” qualities that could prove vital against a physical and well-organised Cameroon side. The former Washington Spirit star has previously delivered solid performances whenever called upon, making her return a welcome boost.

With 27 international caps and four goals to her name, Okobi now has another opportunity to strengthen her legacy with the Super Falcons.

As preparations intensify, the Okobi Super Falcons return stands as one of the standout narratives ahead of the Cameroon friendlies, symbolising resilience, patience, and renewed ambition.

The coaching crew believes the timing of Okobi’s return is significant, with one team official describing her inclusion as “a strategic decision aimed at balancing youth with experience.”

The official noted that her familiarity with high-pressure continental matches could help stabilise the midfield, particularly as Nigeria continues rebuilding under a new technical direction.

Observers have also pointed out that the Cameroon friendlies offer Okobi a platform to quickly reassert her value to the team.

A senior player, speaking anonymously, said the midfielder “has something to prove and that hunger can lift the entire squad,” adding that internal competition for places has intensified since the squad list was released.

Beyond the immediate fixtures, Okobi’s recall is being viewed as a broader signal that consistent club performances will be rewarded.

Football analysts suggest the decision sends a clear message to players based abroad that the national team door remains open, reinforcing confidence within the squad as preparations continue for upcoming qualifiers and major tournaments.
