Members of the corps have voiced their dissatisfaction with the fact that they were still given N33,000 as allowance in February.

An investigation into the non-payment of the approved N77,000 monthly allowance for serving corps members has been requested by the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS).

This request is in response to the fact that the leadership of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has not been meeting their obligations.

NANS has expressed their dismay that NYSC has not yet implemented the payment of the new stipend to the corps members, even though the federal government has approved it several months ago.

The government had given its approval for a raise in the monthly allowance of corps members from N33,000 to N77,000 in July 2024.

A letter from the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, dated September 25 2024 and signed by the Chairman, Mr. Ekpo Nta, contained the approval for the increase of the allowance from N33,000 to N77,000.

This was done in accordance with the provisions of the National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024, which was passed in 2024.

At that time, the government had announced that the increase in the allowance for corps members will take effect.

IREPORT247NEW also reported on January 31st that while speaking to 2024 Batch ‘C’ Stream II corps members in Katsina on Thursday, Brigadier General Yushau Ahmed, Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), announced that corps members will start receiving a new monthly allowance of N77,000 in February 2025.

Ahmed assured them that the increase is part of the 2025 Federal Government budget and will go into effect after the budget is approved.

“This month (January) has already ended, but once the budget is passed. By next month (February), you will start receiving N77,000 instead of the usual N33,000,” he said.

On the other hand, members of the corps have voiced their dissatisfaction with the fact that they were still given N33,000 as allowance in February.

In light of the high cost of living in the country, they stated that the allocation of N33,000 was not sufficient to meet their fundamental requirements.

As a response, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) issued a statement on Monday, signed by Akinbodunse Sileola Felicia, its National Vice President for Inter-Campus Affairs.

In the statement, Felicia justified the call for the investigation of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) for failing to begin payment of the new corps monthly allowance by the end of February, as promised by the Director-General of the Corps.
