The Nigerian Navy has intensified its fight against criminal activities within Nigeria’s coastal and urban communities, as the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) BEECROFT carried out a successful security operation that led to the discovery and dismantling of a suspected drug den in Apapa, Lagos State.
The operation, widely described as a decisive NNS BEECROFT raid, resulted in the recovery of illicit substances believed to have been stored for distribution within the area.
The raid took place at Gidan Drama, located within the Agbo Malu axis of Apapa, a community known for its proximity to maritime and commercial activities.
According to naval authorities, the location had been under surveillance following intelligence reports that criminal elements were using the area as a base for drug peddling and other unlawful activities.
Acting on credible and timely intelligence, naval personnel moved into the area on January 24.
The operation was described as swift and well-coordinated, with officers securing the premises and conducting a thorough search.
During the exercise, quantities of illicit drugs, including marijuana and codeine-based substances, were uncovered and seized by the operatives.
Although the NNS BEECROFT raid successfully led to the recovery of illegal substances, no suspects were apprehended during the operation.
Naval authorities explained that the individuals suspected to be operating the hideout fled the scene immediately after sighting uniformed personnel.
Despite the escape of the suspects, the Navy emphasized that the disruption of the criminal base represents a significant blow to illicit drug distribution networks in the area.
In a statement released on Monday, the Commander of NNS BEECROFT, Rear Admiral Paul Nimmyel, confirmed the outcome of the operation and provided further details on the Navy’s next steps.
He disclosed that all recovered drugs had been officially handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for proper documentation, investigation, and prosecution in line with existing laws.
The handover was conducted by the Base Executive Officer of NNS BEECROFT, Captain Idongesit Udoessien, who represented the Commander during the exercise.
The Navy noted that collaboration with relevant agencies remains critical in ensuring that criminal activities are not only disrupted but also thoroughly investigated to prevent future recurrence.
Rear Admiral Nimmyel stated that the NNS BEECROFT raid reflects the Nigerian Navy’s firm resolve to tackle the growing menace of illicit drug abuse, especially among young people.
He warned that the circulation of substances such as marijuana and codeine poses serious health risks and contributes to broader social and security challenges, including violent crime and organized criminal activity.
According to him, drug abuse has increasingly become a catalyst for insecurity in many communities, fueling acts of violence, theft, and other antisocial behaviors.
He stressed that eliminating drug hubs is a preventive strategy aimed at reducing crime and safeguarding vulnerable populations, particularly youths who are often targeted by drug dealers.
The Navy further explained that the operation aligns with the strategic directive of the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, who has consistently charged naval formations across the country to rid the maritime and adjoining environments of criminal elements.
Under this directive, naval bases are encouraged to operate proactively, either independently or in synergy with sister security agencies.
Security experts have commended the operation, noting that Apapa’s strategic importance as a port and commercial hub makes it critical to maintain strict security oversight in the area.
They argue that criminal hideouts operating near maritime corridors pose risks not only to residents but also to national economic activities linked to ports and shipping.
Residents of nearby communities also welcomed the operation, describing it as a reassuring sign of the Navy’s commitment to maintaining law and order.
Some locals expressed hope that sustained patrols and intelligence-led operations would discourage criminals from returning to the area.
The Nigerian Navy reiterated that it remains committed to conducting regular patrols and targeted operations to ensure that criminal networks find no safe haven within the nation’s maritime domain.
