Nigerian Army troops dismantle a kidnapping syndicate in Imo State, rescue a victim, arrest a suspect, and recover suspected ransom money and a vehicle.
The Nigerian Army has recorded another breakthrough in its ongoing campaign against criminal activities in the South-East after troops of the 34 Artillery Brigade, operating under Operation UDO KA, dismantled a suspected kidnapping syndicate in Imo State.
The operation led to the rescue of a kidnapped victim, the arrest of one suspect, and the recovery of cash believed to be part of a ransom payment, alongside a vehicle allegedly used by the criminal group.
The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Saturday, July 18, 2026, by the Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, 82 Division Nigerian Army, Lieutenant Colonel Olabisi Olalekan Ayeni.
He explained that the successful operation was driven by credible intelligence and carried out jointly with other security agencies.
According to the Army, troops acted on actionable intelligence that pointed to the activities of members of the kidnapping syndicate in Obinwanne Umuaka, located in Njaba Local Government Area of Imo State.
The security team immediately launched a coordinated cordon-and-search operation aimed at locating the suspects and rescuing the victim.
During the operation, soldiers discovered a bag abandoned inside a nearby bush. Preliminary investigations indicated that the bag had been used to transport the ransom paid by the victim’s family before it was discarded after the proceeds had reportedly been shared among members of the gang.
Further intelligence gathering and follow-up operations led security personnel to a residential building where one of the suspected gang members was apprehended.
A search conducted at the property uncovered several items believed to be connected to the kidnapping operation.
Among the recovered exhibits was a black Lexus saloon car allegedly used by the syndicate during the abduction.
Troops also recovered several mobile phones, identity documents, and cash totalling N298,200, which investigators suspect represents part of the ransom collected from the victim.
The Army disclosed that the rescued victim later identified the arrested suspect as one of those involved in the kidnapping.
Investigators also established that the suspect allegedly assisted the syndicate by providing his vehicle to the group’s principal operator and subsequently received a share of the ransom after the victim was released.
Following the operation, the suspect and all recovered exhibits were handed over to the Department of State Services (DSS) for comprehensive investigation and further action.
Security operatives are also intensifying efforts to track down other members of the criminal network, including the alleged kingpin who remains on the run.
Military authorities described the operation as another indication of the effectiveness of intelligence-based security operations in tackling kidnapping and other violent crimes across the South-East.
They stressed that the close collaboration between the Nigerian Army and other security agencies continues to strengthen efforts to dismantle criminal networks and improve public safety in the region.
The Army reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining offensive operations against kidnappers, bandits, and other criminal elements threatening peace and security.
It also encouraged members of the public to continue providing credible and timely information to security agencies, noting that intelligence supplied by citizens remains vital to the success of ongoing operations.
