The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has recorded a series of major successes in its nationwide campaign against drug trafficking, intercepting cocaine concealed in unusual export items and arresting several suspects linked to the distribution of illicit substances across different parts of Nigeria.

The operations, which were carried out in Lagos, Rivers, Anambra, Delta, Nasarawa and Zamfara states, led to the seizure of significant quantities of cocaine, cannabis, methamphetamine, codeine syrup and tramadol.

The agency said the latest recoveries demonstrate the determination of traffickers to devise new concealment methods while highlighting the vigilance of its operatives in preventing dangerous drugs from reaching local and international markets.

One of the most remarkable discoveries occurred in Lagos, where officers attached to the NDLEA‘s Directorate of Operations and General Investigations (DOGI) uncovered cocaine hidden inside everyday household items prepared for export.

According to the agency, the intelligence-driven operation was carried out at a logistics company on Thursday, July 30, 2026, after officers received credible information about suspicious international consignments awaiting shipment.

A detailed examination revealed that traffickers had expertly concealed 250 grams of cocaine inside the solid base of a traditional wooden mortar destined for China.

In another package, operatives discovered an additional 500 grams of cocaine hidden beneath the false compartment of a backpack that was scheduled for shipment to Italy.

The agency noted that criminal syndicates continue to explore increasingly sophisticated methods of concealing narcotics in ordinary consumer goods in an effort to evade security checks at export facilities.

However, it stressed that improved intelligence gathering and enhanced inspection procedures have continued to frustrate such attempts.

Beyond the international seizures, NDLEA operatives also recorded significant breakthroughs in domestic enforcement operations targeting suspected drug traffickers and distributors.

In Rivers State, officers arrested 38-year-old Ugo Gift Okonkwo during an intelligence-led operation at Eagle Island in Port Harcourt on Sunday, July 26.

The suspect, described by the agency as a notorious drug dealer, was allegedly found with a variety of prohibited substances believed to have been prepared for distribution.

Items recovered during the operation included quantities of cannabis, cocaine, methamphetamine, tramadol, codeine syrup and swinol. Investigators believe the seizure dealt a significant blow to an active drug supply network operating within the state.

Another major interception occurred in Anambra State, where NDLEA officers stopped a truck during a routine stop-and-search exercise at the DMGS Roundabout in Onitsha on Monday, July 27.

A thorough search of the vehicle uncovered 26,000 bottles of codeine syrup weighing approximately 3,960 kilograms.

The truck driver, identified as 40-year-old Chinedu Nwanze, was immediately taken into custody as investigators commenced efforts to determine the source and intended destination of the large consignment.

The agency has repeatedly warned that the abuse of codeine-based cough syrup remains a major public health concern, particularly among young people, making the interception of such large quantities a significant achievement in the fight against drug abuse.

In Delta State, anti-narcotics officers also recorded another substantial seizure after intercepting a Toyota Sienna bus bearing registration number KUJ 26 DV along the Kwale-Ughelli Expressway on Sunday, July 26.

Following a careful search of the vehicle, operatives recovered 331.84 kilograms of skunk, a potent strain of cannabis commonly traded within illegal drug markets.

Authorities have since launched investigations aimed at identifying other individuals connected to the shipment.

Meanwhile, enforcement activities extended to Nasarawa State, where a 64-year-old suspect identified as Joseph Nwaeke was arrested on Tuesday, July 28, at Asso Angwan Muazu in the Karu area.

The operation resulted in the recovery of 68 kilograms of skunk alongside 29 grams of methamphetamine.

NDLEA officials said the arrest forms part of ongoing efforts to dismantle drug trafficking networks operating across the North-Central region.

In the North-West, another intelligence-led operation led to the arrest of 27-year-old Sani Umar along the Zaria-Gusau Highway in Zamfara State.

According to the agency, officers intercepted the suspect while he was allegedly transporting 7,400 tablets of tramadol 225mg. Preliminary investigations indicate that the consignment was suspected to be intended for criminal elements and armed bandits operating within the region.

Security authorities have consistently expressed concern over the increasing use of illicit drugs by violent criminal groups, warning that narcotics often contribute to heightened aggression and criminal activities.

The latest series of operations reflects the NDLEA’s sustained nationwide offensive against drug trafficking organisations, local distributors and transnational criminal networks.

The agency maintains that it will continue strengthening intelligence gathering, surveillance and inter-agency collaboration to disrupt illegal drug supply chains and prevent narcotics from circulating within Nigeria or being smuggled across international borders.

As investigations continue into the various arrests and seizures, the NDLEA says additional suspects connected to the intercepted consignments may be identified and brought to justice as part of its commitment to reducing the availability of illicit drugs and protecting public safety.
