One dead and three injured in NDLEA gun battle with suspected drug barons in Edo State as police open full investigation to uncover the truth.
A deadly NDLEA gun battle in Okpuje, Uzeba, Owan West Local Government Area of Edo State, has left one person dead and three others injured during a violent confrontation between operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and suspected drug barons on Monday.
The tragic incident has plunged the quiet community into mourning following the death of 16-year-old Emmanuel Monday, who reportedly died at the scene.
The injured victims — NDLEA officer Godspower Omage (20) and civilian Ajayi Irobia (54) — are currently receiving medical treatment at Godswill Memorial Nursing Centre, Uzeba.
According to Edo State NDLEA Commander, Mr. Mitchell Ofoyeju, the operatives were on a lawful mission when the unexpected attack occurred. He explained that officers had stormed the area to dismantle a notorious cannabis-growing network before they were ambushed by armed traffickers.
“Our men were carrying out a legitimate anti-drug operation when they came under heavy fire from armed drug barons. This NDLEA gun battle shows how determined these criminals are to resist enforcement,” Ofoyeju said.
He added that Okpuje is widely recognized for large-scale cannabis cultivation and that the NDLEA would not relent in its fight to eradicate drug trafficking in Edo State. He urged community leaders to collaborate with the agency to ensure peace and lawful conduct.

In response, the Edo State Police Command has taken control of the case for a comprehensive and transparent investigation. Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eno Ikoedem, confirmed that Commissioner of Police, Mr. Monday Agbonika, visited Okpuje to condole with the bereaved family and inspect the crime scene.
The Commissioner met with the parents of the deceased, Emmanuel Monday, assuring them that justice would be served. He also held a peace meeting with traditional rulers, elders, and youths, appealing for calm as detectives begin their work.
Agbonika later visited Godswill Memorial Nursing Centre, where he spoke with the injured NDLEA officer and the civilian victim. He praised the medical team for their quick intervention and reaffirmed the police’s support for the victims.
Commissioner Agbonika also visited the morgue where Emmanuel’s body was kept. He directed that an autopsy be conducted to determine the precise cause of death and ensure accurate documentation.
ASP Ikoedem disclosed that the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Benin City has been assigned to handle the case.
“The Commissioner has ordered a detailed and impartial investigation. Updates will be shared as soon as credible findings emerge,” she said.
She emphasized that the command remains dedicated to maintaining peace, enforcing justice, and protecting lives and property throughout Edo State.
The NDLEA gun battle has sparked outrage among residents of Okpuje, who described the incident as avoidable and tragic. Many community members remembered Emmanuel as a well-behaved student with a bright future. Some demanded that both NDLEA and the police carry out their duties with fairness and accountability.
Elders of the community have called for restraint, urging all sides to await the outcome of the investigation. Security analysts have also noted that the NDLEA’s confrontation with drug barons underscores the dangerous nature of anti-narcotic operations in Nigeria’s southern states.
Security experts say that the recurring NDLEA gun battle in cannabis-producing regions highlights deep-rooted issues such as poverty, youth unemployment, and lack of alternative livelihoods.
They recommended that authorities introduce sustainable agricultural programs and rehabilitation initiatives for communities previously dependent on cannabis cultivation.
They also urged the government to balance law enforcement with human rights protections, arguing that aggressive operations without community engagement often lead to conflict and loss of lives.
Both the NDLEA and the police have promised to ensure a fair resolution. Ofoyeju reaffirmed that the agency will continue its campaign against illegal drugs, while Commissioner Agbonika pledged to hold all responsible parties accountable, whether security personnel or civilians.
“The police will not shield anyone found culpable. Our mission is to uncover the truth and deliver justice to all affected,” Agbonika stated.
As investigations progress, Edo residents remain hopeful that the outcome will provide closure and serve as a turning point in the fight against narcotics-related violence in the state.
The NDLEA gun battle in Okpuje stands as a painful reminder of the sacrifices made by security agents in their war against drug crimes and the need for safer, more coordinated enforcement strategies in Nigeria.
