NDC has zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to the South as Peter Obi and opposition coalition talks reshape Nigeria’s political landscape
The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has officially zoned its presidential ticket for the 2027 general election to the southern region of the country, a move that is already generating conversations across Nigeria’s political landscape.
The decision was reached during the party’s national convention held on Saturday, where delegates overwhelmingly backed a proposal supporting the zoning arrangement.
The latest position by the NDC is being viewed by political observers as a strategic effort to strengthen internal unity while also positioning the party ahead of growing opposition realignments expected before the 2027 polls.
The party equally announced that its presidential ticket for the 2031 election cycle would be reserved for the northern region, reinforcing its commitment to rotational leadership.
Delegates at the convention adopted the resolution after a motion was introduced by Afam Victor and seconded by Seyi Sowumi.
The motion received wide support from party members who argued that zoning remains one of the most practical ways to maintain political balance and national inclusion in Nigeria’s democratic process.
Beyond the presidential zoning arrangement, the convention also ratified the party’s national executive committee.

The approval followed a motion moved by Victor Umeh, who urged party members to maintain stability within the organisation as preparations for future elections intensify.
The NDC leadership believes the rotational arrangement will help reduce regional tensions often associated with presidential contests in Nigeria.
Over the years, power rotation between the North and South has remained a sensitive issue in the country’s political system, with many stakeholders insisting that equitable leadership representation is necessary for national cohesion.
Interestingly, signs that the party was leaning toward a southern candidate had emerged earlier in the week.
Buba Galadima, a close political associate of Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, openly declared that the party had already settled for the South ahead of the 2027 race.
According to Galadima, the NDC had concluded consultations internally and reached an agreement that the presidential candidate should emerge from the southern part of the country.
He further explained that despite the zoning formula, the party would still organise open primaries rather than impose a consensus candidate.
His comments quickly sparked debate within political circles, especially because some party officials had initially denied reports suggesting that a zoning arrangement already existed.
As recently as May 8, some members of the party’s communication team dismissed claims linking the NDC to any political agreement involving notable opposition figures, including former President Goodluck Jonathan.
However, Saturday’s convention appears to have settled the matter officially, putting an end to speculation surrounding the party’s direction ahead of the next presidential election.
Analysts say the development may influence ongoing discussions among opposition politicians seeking a stronger coalition capable of challenging the ruling establishment in 2027.

The zoning announcement has also reignited conversations around the political future of Peter Obi, whose supporters have consistently advocated for a southern presidency based on fairness and national balance.
Peter Obi, had announced his resignation from ADC, raising concerns over what he described as an increasingly toxic political environment and growing internal crises within party structures.
Obi has repeatedly spoken about the need for equity and inclusion in Nigeria’s political system, particularly within opposition alliances.
Many political watchers believe the NDC decision could create fresh opportunities for negotiations among opposition leaders across the country.
With several political parties expected to enter alliance talks before the election season fully begins, zoning may become a major factor shaping future partnerships and candidate selections.
The decision is also expected to increase pressure on other opposition parties to clarify their own zoning positions.
Political strategists argue that voters are becoming more interested in issues surrounding representation, fairness, and regional inclusion, especially after years of intense political rivalry between the North and South.
Within the NDC itself, the challenge now will be managing the ambitions of multiple southern politicians who may be interested in contesting for the party’s presidential ticket.
While zoning may settle the regional question, competition among aspirants from the South could still become intense as the primaries approach.
Despite this, party leaders insist the arrangement is intended to strengthen internal democracy rather than weaken it.
They maintain that transparent primaries will still be conducted, allowing delegates and party members to decide who eventually emerges as the flag bearer for the 2027 election.
As Nigeria gradually moves closer to another election cycle, the NDC is attempting to position itself as a major force within the opposition camp.
The party’s zoning announcement may not only shape conversations within its structure but could also influence broader political calculations nationwide.
For now, attention has shifted toward possible southern contenders who may declare interest in the race in the coming months.
With political alignments already taking shape behind the scenes, the battle for 2027 is slowly beginning to gather momentum across the country.
