NESREA investigates a suspected chemical spill after a truck crash on the Kaduna-Abuja Expressway, collecting soil, water and substance samples for testing

A mysterious white, foamy substance discovered along the Kaduna-Abuja Expressway has triggered an investigation by Nigeria’s environmental regulator, the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) after preliminary findings linked the material to a truck accident.

The development has raised environmental and public safety concerns after a white, foamy substance was reportedly found around the scene of the accident, prompting authorities to move quickly to determine what the material is and whether it poses any danger to people, animals or the surrounding ecosystem.

NESREA’s intervention was disclosed in a statement issued by the agency’s Assistant Director of Press, Mrs Nwamaka Ejiofor, who said officials had been deployed to the location as part of efforts to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and assess its possible environmental consequences.

Following the report of the incident, officials from the agency’s Kaduna State Field Office visited the affected area to conduct an initial assessment. The team was led by the state coordinator, Mr Hena Emmanuel, who supervised the field investigation.

The NESREA officials did not work alone during the assessment. They engaged with relevant authorities and members of the local community in an attempt to gather more information about the crash, the truck involved and the substance that was reportedly released following the accident.

Among those consulted by the environmental agency were the Jere Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police Sani Zubairu, the Federal Road Safety Corps commander in the area and the community leader.

Information obtained from these stakeholders is expected to assist investigators in piecing together what happened before, during and after the accident.

Preliminary findings from the investigation indicate that a heavy-duty truck was involved in the crash and that the accident may have resulted in the release of part of the vehicle’s cargo.

However, NESREA has yet to establish the exact identity of the spilled material. The agency said it is carrying out further investigations and laboratory examinations before reaching any definitive conclusion about the substance.

The presence of the unusual foamy material has heightened concerns because of the possibility that it could contain chemicals capable of affecting human health or contaminating the environment.

To determine the level of risk, NESREA officials collected samples of the substance found at the scene. Samples of the surrounding soil were also taken, while water was collected from a nearby stream for laboratory testing.

The samples will be analysed to determine the chemical composition of the substance and establish whether the accident has resulted in any form of environmental contamination.

The testing is also expected to help authorities determine whether the nearby water source has been affected by the suspected spill and whether further intervention or environmental remediation will be necessary.

The agency’s investigation will also help determine the potential impact of the incident on the surrounding area, particularly if the spilled material is confirmed to be hazardous.

NESREA said it gathered information from security agencies, government officials and residents as part of its efforts to obtain a clearer picture of the incident.

The involvement of local residents is considered important to the investigation, as members of the community may have witnessed the crash or noticed changes in the area following the incident.

Meanwhile, the environmental agency has issued a precautionary warning to members of the public, urging them to stay away from the affected area until the investigation is concluded.

NESREA specifically advised residents and other individuals in the vicinity not to touch or come into direct contact with the white, foamy substance.

The public was also warned to avoid using or coming into contact with nearby water sources and soil around the location of the incident until laboratory analysis determines whether they have been contaminated.

The agency said the precautionary measures are necessary to minimise the risk of possible exposure to hazardous substances.

While the nature of the material remains unknown, the warning is intended to protect residents, passersby and other individuals who may be tempted to investigate the substance themselves.

Road accidents involving heavy-duty vehicles can sometimes create additional environmental challenges when the vehicles are transporting chemicals or other potentially dangerous materials.

In such cases, a quick assessment is necessary to prevent spilled substances from spreading into nearby waterways, farmland or residential areas.

The Kaduna-Abuja Expressway is a major transportation route linking Kaduna and the Federal Capital Territory, with a significant volume of commercial traffic passing through the corridor daily.

NESREA’s ongoing investigation is therefore expected to establish whether the incident poses any wider environmental threat and what steps should be taken to contain any possible contamination.

For now, the agency has not confirmed that the substance is hazardous, stressing the importance of awaiting the outcome of the laboratory analysis before drawing conclusions.

The results of the tests will provide authorities with more information about the material and guide any necessary response.

Until then, NESREA has urged the public to remain cautious and comply with safety advice by avoiding the affected substance, surrounding soil and nearby water sources.

The agency is expected to take further action based on the findings of its investigation and the outcome of the laboratory tests.
