A devastating Myanmar explosion has killed dozens of people and injured many more in the country’s northeast, according to local media reports and statements from a powerful ethnic armed group. The blast occurred in Shan State near the border with China, sending a massive plume of smoke into the sky and triggering secondary explosions that destroyed homes and buildings.
The incident has shocked residents of the rebel-held region, where rescue workers have been racing to recover victims and assist survivors. While the exact death toll remains unclear, reports indicate that at least 46 people, including children, lost their lives in one of the deadliest explosions to hit the area in recent years.

Shan State Blast Leaves Trail of Destruction
The explosion struck the village of Kaung Tat in northeastern Myanmar at about 12:30pm local time.
According to local reports, the blast occurred at an explosives storage facility, causing widespread destruction across the surrounding area.
A rescue worker told local media:
“Fifty-five people were killed.”
Another report placed the death toll at at least 46, including six children, with more than 70 others wounded.
Videos shared on social media showed a towering column of smoke rising from the site, followed by multiple secondary explosions. Images from the aftermath revealed flattened structures and heavily damaged homes.
Myanmar Explosives Depot Located in Rebel-Held Territory
The blast occurred in territory controlled by the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA), one of Myanmar’s most influential ethnic armed groups.
The TNLA later confirmed the explosion in a public statement, saying the stored explosives were being used for mining activities in the region, which is known for its ruby-rich deposits.
The group acknowledged that the incident caused:
“Numerous casualties”
among local residents but did not provide an exact death toll.
Investigation Underway Into Cause of Explosion
Authorities and TNLA officials have launched an investigation to determine what triggered the deadly blast.
In its statement, the rebel group pledged accountability, saying:
“Those responsible will be held accountable.”
Rescue operations were continuing hours after the explosion, with emergency teams searching damaged buildings and assisting the injured.
Myanmar Rescue Operations Continue Amid Uncertainty
The full scale of the disaster may not be known for some time as officials work to verify casualty figures and assess the damage.
Several houses were reportedly destroyed, while survivors described scenes of panic following the powerful explosion.
The tragedy comes as Myanmar continues to face instability and conflict in several regions following the military takeover in 2021. The incident has renewed concerns about the safety of explosive materials stored near populated communities.

The deadly Myanmar explosion in Shan State has left a community mourning dozens of victims while investigators seek answers about what caused the blast. As rescue operations continue and casualty figures are verified, attention is turning to accountability and preventing similar tragedies in the future.
