Mother of three dies by suicide following marriage rejection

In a heartbreaking incident that has shocked Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, a 30-year-old woman, Abigail Adebayo, reportedly ended her life after her fiancé’s family disapproved of her marriage.

Sources say the tragic event unfolded following a series of family disagreements over Abigail’s past and her children from a previous relationship.

Abigail had been in a relationship with Oniga Abiola since September 2025, and the couple had been making plans to formalize their union in marriage.

However, tensions reportedly arose when Abiola’s mother requested that her son bring Abigail to their home for family discussions about the upcoming wedding.

According to insiders, it was during this meeting that Abigail’s status as a mother of three children became known, leading to her prospective mother-in-law rejecting the marriage.

Following this, Abiola was said to have expressed his own disapproval, influenced by his family’s sentiments.

The dual rejection is believed to have greatly affected Abigail, who reportedly struggled to cope with the emotional stress and societal pressures surrounding the situation.

Residents of the area recounted that Abigail was later discovered motionless in her room.

Alarmed, family members rushed her to the General Hospital in Ijebu Ode.

Medical personnel confirmed that she was dead on arrival, raising serious concerns about mental health, societal expectations, and family pressures that may have contributed to the tragedy.

Abiola reportedly informed the Atan Ijebu division of the Ogun State Police Command that Abigail had ingested insecticide.

This information was immediately acted upon by detectives, who visited the scene and examined her body at the hospital.

Police sources confirmed that no visible marks of violence were observed on Abigail’s body, suggesting that the cause of death was self-inflicted.

Authorities have launched a formal investigation into the incident to confirm the circumstances surrounding Abigail’s death.

Investigators are focusing on understanding the family dynamics, the social pressures Abigail faced, and any other contributing factors that may have led to her decision.

This incident highlights the critical issue of mental health awareness in Nigeria, particularly among women who face societal and familial pressures.

Experts argue that emotional support and counseling are often lacking in communities, making vulnerable individuals more susceptible to extreme actions when confronted with family or societal disapproval.

Neighbors and acquaintances described Abigail as a kind and gentle woman who had looked forward to her upcoming marriage.

Many expressed shock that such a devastating outcome could result from family disagreements.

Community leaders are urging families to consider the emotional well-being of their members, emphasizing that open communication and empathy could prevent similar tragedies.

Police spokespersons have reiterated the need for mental health support services, stressing that suicide prevention remains a priority in communities across Ogun State.

Authorities also encouraged residents to report signs of emotional distress among friends and relatives to professional counselors or local health facilities.

This case of Abigail Adebayo is one among several reported incidents where family or societal rejection has had tragic consequences.

Experts note that while personal history, such as having children from previous relationships, should not preclude someone from marriage, societal stigmas continue to impact decision-making and emotional health.

The Ogun State Police Command assured the public that detectives at the Atan Ijebu division are thoroughly investigating the circumstances leading to Abigail’s death.

The investigation includes interviews with family members, neighbors, and other witnesses, along with an examination of the home and any items that could provide additional context about her mental state.

As investigations continue, many are calling for more awareness programs on mental health, especially for young women navigating relationships and family expectations.

Organizations and local NGOs have urged families to create supportive environments that encourage open dialogue and discourage extreme reactions to disagreements or disapproval.

Abigail’s tragic death serves as a stark reminder of the pressures individuals face when their life choices are judged or rejected by family members.

Her story resonates with broader discussions in Nigeria about the need for mental health interventions, community support structures, and breaking stigmas that often silence those in emotional distress.

Authorities continue to call for vigilance and empathy in handling family and relationship disputes, emphasizing that timely support and counseling can prevent future tragedies.

The community of Ijebu Ode mourns Abigail Adebayo, whose death has left a lasting impact and raised urgent questions about societal pressures, family dynamics, and mental health support in Ogun State.
