Al-Nassr forward Sadio Mane has disclosed why he rejected Manchester United, citing their attacking talents as a key reason. Instead, he joined Liverpool, where he became a Premier League legend.
Mane arrived at Liverpool in 2016 from Southampton and immediately made an impact, scoring 120 goals in 269 appearances. His performances cemented him as one of the league’s most feared forwards.
In a candid interview with ESPN, Mane revealed Manchester United’s interest while he was still at Southampton. The Red Devils, managed by Louis van Gaal, made an approach for the young Senegalese winger.
“I was talking to Van Gaal at that time. Rooney was there. Di María was there. Memphis Depay was there,” Mane recalled. “I wanted to know where I would play consistently.”
Mane said Van Gaal assured him he would get a chance if he impressed in training. However, the Senegal international felt that United’s attacking lineup could limit his opportunities.
“At that stage, I needed guidance and development. I wanted one or two more years to grow before joining a team with so many established stars,” Mane said.
Mane explained he prioritizes regular play over club prestige. He felt joining Manchester United with competing forwards could stall his growth, whereas Liverpool offered a more defined role under Jurgen Klopp.

Klopp personally called Mane to persuade him to join Liverpool. The coach emphasized Mane would be central to the team’s attacking strategy, offering regular football and personal development opportunities.
Mane admitted the decision was difficult, given Manchester United’s history and global reputation. Yet, he believed patience and growth at Liverpool outweighed immediate glory at Old Trafford.
Reflecting on his time at Liverpool, Mane said the move allowed him to flourish in the Premier League, winning major honors and becoming a key player for both club and country.
He highlighted that his agent played a crucial role, advising him to carefully consider playing time versus prestige. Proper guidance, he said, can define a young player’s career trajectory.
Mane recalled that Southampton provided a solid foundation, but he still needed further development before taking on the pressures of a club like Manchester United at that time.
“This decision taught me patience,” Mane said. “It showed me that choosing the right environment is crucial. Growth, not immediate fame, should guide young players.”
Liverpool’s style under Klopp, focused on pressing, fast transitions, and positional freedom, aligned with Mane’s strengths. This contrasted with United’s more structured attacking system under Van Gaal.
Mane also reflected on Manchester United signing Anthony Martial after failing to land him, acknowledging the club had depth but also intense competition for forward positions, influencing his decision.
The Senegalese forward stressed that every player must consider where they can play consistently. While Manchester United offered a big stage, Mane wanted to be central rather than peripheral in attack.
“I needed to be sure I would play and improve every week. Liverpool offered me that path, and I grew into the player I wanted to become,” Mane said.
Mane admitted that looking back, he has no regrets. The choice to turn down Manchester United shaped his career, leading to moves to Bayern Munich and eventually Al-Nassr, where he continues to excel.
He also acknowledged the importance of mentorship from coaches like Klopp, whose confidence in him accelerated his growth and allowed him to compete at the highest levels consistently.
Mane’s story illustrates how elite players weigh decisions carefully, balancing immediate opportunities with long-term development, and highlights the strategic thinking behind career-defining moves.
The forward concluded that Manchester United remains a prestigious club, but for young talents, choosing an environment that nurtures growth, encourages playing time, and suits their style is paramount.

Mane’s honesty provides insight for aspiring players worldwide, emphasizing that careful career decisions, patience, and proper guidance can define whether talent reaches its full potential in elite football.
