Man United rejected chance to sign Super Eagles star Wilfred Ndidi – Romano

Manchester United rejected chance to sign Super Eagles star Wilfred Ndidi despite the midfielder being offered to the club at a low cost during the January 2024 transfer window, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Manchester United were presented with the opportunity to strengthen their midfield but chose not to proceed, even though the Super Eagles star was keen on completing a move to Old Trafford.

Speaking on his popular Here We Go podcast, Romano explained that intermediaries made contact with Manchester United to propose the former Leicester City midfielder as an option.

Man United rejected chance to sign Super Eagles star Wilfred Ndidi at a time when the club were actively assessing possible reinforcements following persistent midfield inconsistencies.

Romano revealed that the Nigeria international was viewed as a low-risk and affordable opportunity, especially given his Premier League pedigree and availability during that period.

“I can tell you that Wilfred Ndidi, former midfielder from Leicester, now at Besiktas, was offered as an opportunity to Man United,” Romano stated during the podcast discussion.

The transfer expert added that the midfielder showed strong interest in the move and was prepared to take the next step in his career by joining one of England’s biggest clubs.

“A low-cost opportunity, the player was very keen on the move but Man United decided immediately not to proceed,” Romano explained, shedding light on the club’s stance.

Man United rejected chance to sign Super Eagles star Wilfred Ndidi without entering prolonged negotiations, indicating that the decision was swift and decisive from the club’s hierarchy.

The Red Devils reportedly felt that the deal did not align with their broader recruitment strategy, despite Ndidi’s experience and proven reliability at the highest level.

Ndidi had been heavily linked with a move back to the Premier League after leaving Leicester City, following the Foxes’ relegation and subsequent squad overhaul.

Instead of returning to England, the defensive midfielder completed a move to Turkish giants Besiktas in the summer of 2024, where he became a key figure quickly.

Man United rejected chance to sign Super Eagles star Wilfred Ndidi even as questions persisted over the balance and defensive solidity of their midfield options.

During his time at Leicester City, Ndidi established himself as one of the league’s most effective ball-winning midfielders, earning widespread admiration for his consistency.

He made 220 Premier League appearances for the Foxes and played a crucial role in their historic FA Cup triumph in 2021.

Ndidi also featured prominently in Leicester’s Community Shield victory, further underlining his importance during the most successful spell in the club’s modern history.

Romano stressed that Manchester United had the chance to complete the deal cheaply but opted against pursuing what he described as a “clear market opportunity.”

“They had the chance to do something like a low-cost opportunity but they decided against it,” Romano reiterated, emphasising the club’s firm position.

Ndidi’s strong performances in Turkey have only intensified those discussions, with the Nigerian continuing to demonstrate his tactical discipline and physical presence.

Despite the rejection, Manchester United remain focused on younger profiles and long-term investments as part of their evolving recruitment model.

For Ndidi, the move to Besiktas has provided stability and regular football, allowing him to maintain form for both club and country.
