Kano police arrest armed robbery suspects across state lines

Kano police arrest two suspects in Lagos robbery and attempted murder, showcasing intelligence-led policing and strong community collaboration.

The Kano police arrest of two men linked to a violent Lagos robbery and attempted murder has marked a significant success in Nigeria’s fight against crime.

This breakthrough underscores the growing effectiveness of intelligence-led policing and the critical role of community cooperation in securing lives and property.

According to Kano State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Haruna, the suspects were apprehended on September 11 at Na’ibawa Quarters following careful intelligence operations.

Acting on verified information, tactical operatives of the Kano State Police Command located and arrested the suspects: 25-year-old Mathew Adewole of Na’ibawa Quarters and 31-year-old Mukhtar Muhammad of Unguwa Uku Quarters.

The arrests are linked to a Lagos incident on August 19 at Bera Estate, Chevron. During the attack, the victim, identified as Lil-Kesh, sustained life-threatening injuries, including a deep neck cut.

The suspects reportedly forced the victim to transfer over N2 million into a bank account registered under Muhammad.

“The suspects showed premeditation and targeted the victim in a high-security estate,” SP Haruna said.

“This arrest demonstrates the power of intelligence combined with community vigilance.”

During interrogation, Adewole allegedly confessed to participating in the attack.

Investigators revealed that the suspects had been monitoring the victim before launching the assault, highlighting a disturbing level of sophistication in their criminal planning.

The Lagos robbery raised alarm across the community, challenging assumptions about the safety of gated estates and highlighting the need for enhanced vigilance in urban areas.

The Kano police arrest aligns with directives from the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, who has stressed the importance of intelligence-driven operations and community policing to prevent crimes before they escalate.

“Proactive policing through intelligence gathering is the cornerstone of our strategy,” SP Haruna noted.

“We are committed to ensuring that criminals cannot evade justice by moving across state boundaries.”

The case also illustrates the importance of financial intelligence. By tracing the N2 million transfer, the police directly linked Muhammad to the crime, reinforcing the evidence for prosecution.

Residents of Kano played a pivotal role in the success of this operation. Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Bakori, praised the community members who provided critical information that led to the arrest.

“Without the cooperation of our citizens, such breakthroughs would be difficult,” Bakori said.

“We will continue to strengthen ties with local communities and security agencies to protect lives and property.”

The incident demonstrates the effectiveness of community policing in Nigeria, showing that collaborative approaches between citizens and law enforcement can yield concrete results in crime prevention.

Following their arrest, the suspects were transferred to the Lagos State Police Command for further investigation and prosecution.

Legal experts suggest they could face significant prison sentences if convicted due to the severity of the crimes, which include armed robbery and attempted murder.

The victim, still recovering, expressed relief at the arrests and urged citizens to support law enforcement efforts.

“Justice is being served, and this sends a message that criminals will be held accountable,” said a family spokesperson.

The Kano police arrest underscores the value of interstate cooperation in Nigeria’s security framework. Criminals often attempt to evade capture by relocating to different states, but coordinated intelligence efforts ensure that they cannot escape accountability.

Security analysts note that this case also highlights the importance of public awareness and vigilance.

Citizens who report suspicious activity can play a decisive role in preventing crimes and assisting police operations.

Historically, the Nigerian Police Force has faced criticism for inefficiency or lack of transparency.

However, successful operations like this help rebuild trust, showing that professional, intelligence-led investigations can deliver results.

By linking suspects in Kano to a Lagos crime, the police have sent a clear message: no state is a safe haven for criminals.

Public confidence is crucial, and the command’s proactive approach is a positive step toward strengthening the relationship between law enforcement and citizens.

Experts emphasize that fighting violent crime in Nigeria requires a holistic approach:

  • For the police: continued investment in intelligence networks and modern technology.
  • For communities: active participation in reporting suspicious behavior.
  • For policymakers: institutional support to sustain intelligence-led policing initiatives.

Commissioner Bakori reaffirmed Kano State Police Command’s commitment to public safety.

“Criminals will find no refuge here. We remain vigilant and dedicated to protecting lives and property,” he said.

As the suspects await arraignment in Lagos courts, Nigerians are watching closely, hoping that justice will be swift and transparent.

The Kano police arrest is more than a law enforcement success—it is a demonstration of what can be achieved when intelligence, community cooperation, and decisive action come together to combat crime.
