IPOB calls for an independent investigation into Igboland killings, urging the U.S. and global powers to probe Nigeria’s worsening insecurity and persecution.
The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has called for an independent investigation into Igboland killings, urging the United States government and the international community to launch a global probe into ongoing violence, religious persecution, and insecurity in Nigeria’s Southeast region.
In a statement signed by Comrade Emma Powerful, the IPOB Media and Publicity Secretary, the group said the investigation should identify and expose those responsible for what it described as state-sponsored terrorism and ethno-religious killings targeting the Igbo and Christian populations in Nigeria.
IPOB commended the U.S. government for designating Nigeria as a “country of particular concern” but maintained that the declaration must be followed by a comprehensive IPOB investigation into Igboland killings to uncover the perpetrators, financiers, and political enablers behind the violence.
“The United States’ recent classification of Nigeria is a commendable step, but the work is far from complete,” IPOB stated.
“There remains an urgent need for an independent international inquiry into the persistent ethno-religious killings and insecurity in Igboland. Such a probe is crucial to unmask those responsible and ensure justice in accordance with international human rights law.”
The group argued that local institutions have failed to address the crisis due to corruption and political complicity, insisting that only an external, internationally supervised inquiry can bring accountability.
Describing the U.S. designation as a moral victory for justice and truth, IPOB said the move validated long-standing concerns about the Nigerian government’s alleged tolerance of religiously motivated violence.
“This recognition is not merely symbolic; it represents a moral victory for justice, truth, and the sanctity of human life,” the group emphasized.
“By calling out the Nigerian state’s complicity in ethnic and religious violence, the international community has saved countless lives that would otherwise have been lost to orchestrated insecurity and genocidal attacks.”
The organization noted that a Canadian court had earlier labeled the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as terror-enabling organizations, a development it said reinforced the need for an independent IPOB investigation into Igboland killings to expose political actors linked to violence.
IPOB urged the United Nations, European Union, and international rights bodies such as Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch to intervene by initiating an independent inquiry into the rising insecurity in Nigeria’s Southeast.
“The blood of the innocent cries out for justice,” IPOB warned.
“We appeal to the conscience of the world not to remain silent in the face of ongoing persecution and targeted attacks on Christians and Igbos in Nigeria. The silence of the global community during the 1967 Biafran genocide must never be repeated.”
The movement added that a full-scale international IPOB investigation into Igboland killings would expose both domestic and foreign sponsors of terrorism who have destabilized the region for political and economic gain.
The group extended deep gratitude to former U.S. President Donald Trump, Senator Ted Cruz, and other prominent American leaders for their advocacy in highlighting the persecution of Christians and minorities in Nigeria.
“The noble IPOB family extends profound gratitude to President Donald J. Trump, Senator Ted Cruz, and all patriotic Biafrans and friends of Biafra in the United States for their tireless efforts,” IPOB said.
“Their courageous advocacy has drawn global attention to the evils of religious persecution, state-sponsored violence, and sectarian killings that have plagued Nigeria.”
IPOB also recognized the American Veterans of Igbo Descent (AVID) and Ambassadors for Self-determination for their active role in raising awareness through international diplomatic channels.
The organization praised the steadfastness of Biafrans both at home and abroad, saying their persistence has been instrumental in achieving recent diplomatic recognition.
IPOB noted that its supporters have consistently championed human rights and exposed injustice through lawful advocacy.
“We salute the courage and resilience of all Biafrans worldwide,” the statement continued.
“Through your advocacy and global campaigns, the plight of our people has gained international visibility. Your dedication fuels our diplomatic successes and strengthens the push for accountability.”
The movement reiterated its commitment to non-violence and diplomacy, emphasizing that its mission remains a peaceful struggle rooted in liberty, justice, and equality.
In recent years, Igboland has witnessed a sharp increase in violence, kidnappings, and extrajudicial killings.
Human rights organizations have repeatedly accused Nigerian security agencies of using excessive force while failing to protect civilians from terrorist attacks and political thuggery.
Observers link the region’s instability to a mix of political marginalization, economic neglect, and the federal government’s heavy-handed response to self-determination movements.
IPOB believes these conditions have fueled widespread anger and distrust toward the Nigerian state.
The group’s call for an IPOB investigation into Igboland killings reflects growing frustration over what it perceives as the world’s slow response to systematic persecution against Christians and ethnic minorities in Nigeria.
