Ibadan leaders have warned former Ekiti governor Ayo Fayose against involving the Olubadan in political disputes, urging respect for tradition.

Prominent voices in Ibadan have renewed calls for political actors to respect traditional institutions, following recent remarks attributed to former Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose concerning Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and the revered Olubadan of Ibadanland.

The latest reaction came from Mogaji Olusola Ladoja, head of the Akinsola Family Compound, who expressed concern over what he described as repeated attempts to drag the traditional institution into political disagreements.

According to him, political debates should remain within the boundaries of governance and public policy without involving royal authorities who serve as symbols of unity for the people.

The development has generated conversations across Ibadan, with many stakeholders stressing the need to preserve the dignity and neutrality of traditional leadership.

Community leaders argue that the Olubadan occupies a special place in the social and cultural life of the ancient city and should not be drawn into partisan contests.

Ladoja’s remarks followed an earlier position taken by the Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes (CCII), which also advised Fayose to refrain from making comments capable of creating unnecessary tension around the royal institution.

The group reportedly described such statements as inappropriate and capable of undermining the respect traditionally accorded to the monarch.

Speaking on the matter, Ladoja said it was difficult to understand why a politician who often associates himself with Ibadan and publicly acknowledges his roots in the city would continue to direct criticism at Governor Makinde.

He maintained that while political disagreements are normal in a democratic setting, attacks should not extend to respected cultural institutions.

According to him, Governor Makinde’s administration has implemented several projects aimed at improving infrastructure and transforming different parts of Ibadan.

Roads, public facilities, urban renewal initiatives and economic development programmes have all contributed to changing the landscape of the city in recent years.

The traditional leader argued that regardless of political affiliations, the developmental efforts being undertaken in the state should be assessed objectively.

He noted that constructive criticism remains an important part of democracy but should be guided by fairness and respect.

Observers note that political exchanges involving influential figures often attract public attention because of the personalities involved.

However, many residents believe traditional rulers should remain above political disputes, given their role as custodians of culture and heritage.

Ladoja further stated that the Olubadan serves as a father figure to all citizens, irrespective of political party, ethnic background or personal beliefs.

For that reason, he said, any attempt to associate the monarch with political rivalries could create unnecessary divisions among the people.

The issue has once again highlighted the delicate relationship between politics and traditional institutions in Nigeria.

Across many states, traditional rulers are respected for their contributions to peacebuilding, conflict resolution and community development.

As a result, stakeholders often urge politicians to avoid statements that may diminish public confidence in those institutions.

In Ibadan, the monarchy remains one of the most respected traditional institutions in the country.

The Olubadan system, known for its unique succession structure, has long been regarded as a source of stability and continuity. Many indigenes view the institution as an enduring symbol of the city’s identity and history.

Political analysts believe that comments touching on traditional institutions often generate stronger reactions because they involve deeply rooted cultural sentiments.

While disagreements among politicians are expected, many citizens prefer that such exchanges remain focused on governance, policies and public administration.

Ladoja also referenced the relationship between Fayose and Governor Makinde, suggesting that the former Ekiti governor had benefited from goodwill and support from the Oyo State governor at different times.

He expressed disappointment that the relationship had seemingly deteriorated into public criticism.

According to him, leaders should prioritise issues affecting the welfare of citizens rather than engaging in disputes that could distract from pressing developmental concerns. He called for greater maturity among political actors and urged them to contribute positively to national discourse.

The debate has further drawn attention to the importance of preserving mutual respect between political leaders and traditional authorities. Community elders argue that maintaining such respect helps strengthen social harmony and prevents unnecessary conflicts.

Many residents of Ibadan have echoed similar sentiments, insisting that the city’s traditional institutions should remain insulated from political battles.

They believe that preserving the dignity of the Olubadan stool is essential for maintaining public confidence in the institution and ensuring its continued relevance in community affairs.

As discussions continue, stakeholders are urging all parties involved to exercise restraint in their public comments.

They argue that the focus should remain on development, governance and the wellbeing of the people rather than controversies that could deepen political divisions.

For now, the message from community leaders appears clear: the revered Olubadan institution should remain above partisan politics.

As Ibadan continues to grow and modernise, many residents believe that protecting the integrity of its traditional structures is just as important as pursuing economic and infrastructural development.

With tensions rising over the exchange of comments, observers say the situation presents an opportunity for political leaders to demonstrate statesmanship, promote unity and show respect for institutions that have served as pillars of stability for generations.
