NIPSS attack near Jos leaves two soldiers and a police officer dead after armed gunmen targeted staff residences, sparking investigations.
Fresh concerns over the security of strategic government institutions have emerged following a deadly attack in Plateau State that claimed the lives of three security operatives and triggered an intensive investigation by security agencies.
The incident occurred late Monday night at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, a prominent policy and leadership development institution located near Jos.
According to reports, armed assailants stormed the area around the institute at about 11:40 p.m., launching an attack that resulted in a fierce gun battle with security personnel stationed at the facility.
The NIPSS attack reportedly led to the deaths of two soldiers and a police officer who were deployed to protect the institute’s staff residential quarters.
The security operatives were said to have confronted the attackers immediately after gunshots were heard near the entrance and surrounding areas of the institution.

Sources familiar with the incident revealed that the attackers may have been pursuing a specific objective rather than carrying out a random assault.
Preliminary information suggests that some senior members of staff at the institute had recently received threatening messages demanding large sums of money.
According to insiders, handwritten notes were allegedly pasted on the doors of two senior officials days before the attack.
The messages reportedly demanded payments running into millions of naira as well as foreign currency, while warning of consequences if the demands were ignored.
The targeted officials were identified as the Acting Director of Studies, Barrister Nima Salman-Mann, and a Directing Staff member, Professor Haruna Dabin.
The threats were reportedly reported to the management of the institute shortly after they were discovered.
Security sources believe the NIPSS attack may have been connected to those earlier extortion demands.

Investigators are exploring whether the attackers attempted to gain access to the residences of the officials after failing to secure the payments they allegedly demanded.
An anonymous source familiar with the security arrangement at the institute explained that local security personnel usually monitor the staff quarters during the daytime, while military and police personnel are responsible for overnight protection.
According to the source, the attackers may have deliberately chosen to strike at night when they believed their targets would be within their residences.
“During the day, community security personnel monitor activities around the staff quarters. At night, soldiers and police officers take over.
“It appears the attackers came with the intention of reaching specific residences after previously issuing threats,” the source disclosed.
The confrontation quickly escalated into an exchange of gunfire. Although the security operatives succeeded in preventing the attackers from gaining full access to their intended targets, three personnel lost their lives during the battle.
The bodies of the deceased officers have since been deposited in a mortuary while authorities continue efforts to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attack.
Meanwhile, the management of NIPSS has sought to reassure participants, staff members and residents that the institution remains safe despite the incident.
In an official statement issued on Tuesday, the institute confirmed that a security incident had occurred in the vicinity of the institution but emphasized that the situation had been brought under control through the prompt intervention of security personnel.
The statement noted that there was no immediate threat to participants attending programmes at the institute, members of staff, residents or critical facilities within the institution.
Management further stated that all scheduled activities at the institute were continuing without disruption despite the tragic incident.
The NIPSS attack has nevertheless generated widespread concern because of the strategic importance of the institution.
NIPSS serves as one of Nigeria’s foremost centres for policy research, strategic planning and leadership development, attracting senior government officials, military officers, academics and policymakers from across the country.
Security analysts have warned that attacks on strategic institutions can have implications beyond immediate casualties, especially when they involve threats directed at senior personnel.
Such incidents often raise questions about intelligence gathering, protective measures and the evolving tactics of criminal groups.
The latest NIPSS attack also highlights broader security challenges facing parts of Plateau State and neighbouring regions.
In recent years, communities across several states have experienced incidents involving kidnappings, extortion, armed attacks and other forms of violent criminal activity.
While authorities have not officially linked the attackers to any known criminal network, investigators are expected to examine all available evidence, including the earlier threat messages reportedly received by the affected officials.
Security agencies have already commenced a comprehensive investigation aimed at establishing the exact sequence of events, uncovering the motive behind the operation and identifying everyone involved.
The management of the institute has pledged full cooperation with law enforcement agencies and assured the public that verified updates will be provided as investigations progress.
As the nation awaits further details, the NIPSS attack serves as another reminder of the risks faced daily by security personnel protecting critical national institutions.
The sacrifice of the fallen soldiers and police officer has been widely acknowledged, with many observers noting that their actions may have prevented a far more devastating outcome.
For now, authorities remain focused on bringing the perpetrators to justice while strengthening security measures around the institution and other strategic facilities across the country.

May their souls rest in perfect peace
