A major humanitarian effort has brought relief to hundreds of stranded Nigerians as the Federal Government successfully coordinated the return of 708 citizens from Niamey, Niger Republic, to Kano State.

The operation highlights ongoing efforts to protect Nigerians abroad and respond to distress situations involving vulnerable citizens.

The evacuation, which took place on Monday, was executed through a coordinated system involving multiple government agencies and diplomatic channels.

The returnees were transported in a fleet of buses and received at the international wing of Aminu Kano International Airport, where officials immediately began documentation and profiling procedures to properly account for all arriving Nigerians.

According to officials from the National Emergency Management Agency, the exercise is part of a broader commitment to ensuring that Nigerians facing hardship outside the country are not abandoned.

Stranded Nigerians

The agency confirmed that all 708 individuals have been verified and are currently undergoing further screening in collaboration with relevant stakeholders.

This step is crucial to maintaining proper records and ensuring that each Nigerian receives appropriate attention and support.

Humanitarian support was quickly provided upon arrival. The returning Nigerians were offered food, temporary shelter, and other essential services to help them stabilize after their journey.

Authorities also confirmed that plans have been finalized to transport the returnees to their various home states, ensuring they are reunited with their families and communities.

A breakdown of the returnees shows that Nigerians from different parts of the country were affected.

Kano State recorded the highest number, followed by Jigawa, Katsina, Kaduna, Borno, Yobe, Zamfara, Benue, Kogi, and Niger states.

This distribution reflects the widespread nature of migration challenges faced by Nigerians seeking better opportunities or escaping difficult conditions abroad.

Health concerns were also given priority during the evacuation. Medical teams, including personnel from humanitarian organizations, were deployed to attend to Nigerians who required medical attention.

Those with more serious conditions are expected to be referred to appropriate health facilities for further treatment.

This reflects the government’s commitment to safeguarding the wellbeing of all Nigerians, especially in emergency situations.

Officials emphasized that the evacuation was not forced but voluntary, as many Nigerians involved lacked the financial capacity to return home independently.

The exercise was made possible through collaboration between the Nigerian Embassy in Niamey, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and other relevant institutions working together to ensure the safe return of citizens.

The Kano Field Coordinator of the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons described the operation as a “whole-of-government response,” highlighting the level of coordination involved.

According to her, the mission demonstrates how different arms of government can come together to support Nigerians in distress.

She further explained that beyond transportation, additional support measures have been put in place.

These include temporary accommodation, feeding arrangements, and the provision of dignity kits, particularly for women among the returning Nigerians.

These interventions are aimed at easing the immediate challenges faced by the returnees and restoring a sense of dignity.

After completing the profiling and documentation process, the returning Nigerians will be handed over to relevant authorities for reintegration.

This next phase will focus on helping them resettle, access support systems, and reintegrate into their communities.

Government agencies are expected to monitor their progress and provide continued assistance where necessary.

This evacuation stands as a reminder of the importance of regional cooperation and the need to prioritize the welfare of Nigerians wherever they may be.

It also underscores the government’s responsibility to respond swiftly to humanitarian crises affecting its citizens beyond national borders.
