Europa league draw: Bournemouth, Sunderland, Palace, Celtic learn opponents

Europa League Draw Produces Exciting Fixtures

Europa League draw has produced a series of eye-catching fixtures for Bournemouth, Sunderland, Crystal Palace and Celtic, with several European giants standing between the British clubs and progress.

The four teams discovered their league-phase opponents on Friday, with the fixtures guaranteeing supporters some memorable nights as the clubs prepare for another demanding European campaign.

Bournemouth will make their first appearance in the competition and have been handed a particularly attractive schedule, including a home meeting with Italian powerhouse AC Milan.

The Cherries, who finished sixth in the Premier League last season, will also travel to face Real Sociedad, giving them two high-profile encounters during their European adventure.

Bournemouth’s European Debut

Bournemouth’s remaining opponents are Viktoria Plzen, Sparta Prague, Sturm Graz, Celta Vigo, Hapoel Be’er Sheva and Lillestrom.

The south-coast club will therefore have to combine the excitement of their first European campaign with the demands of maintaining strong domestic form throughout a congested season.

The home clash against Milan is expected to attract enormous attention, while the trip to Real Sociedad could provide another stern examination of Bournemouth’s European ambitions.

Sunderland, meanwhile, have been rewarded for their return to European competition with one of the most glamorous fixtures available, an away trip to the famous San Siro.

The Black Cats are returning to continental competition for the first time since the 1973-74 season, making their Europa League campaign particularly significant for the club and its supporters.

Sunderland Face Milan At San Siro

Sunderland will face AC Milan away from home, while their other opponents include AZ Alkmaar, GNK Dinamo, Anderlecht, Jagiellonia, Lech Poznan, Levski Sofia and Torreense.

Their return represents an important milestone after more than five decades away from European football, and the San Siro encounter could become one of the season’s defining occasions.

The Black Cats finished seventh in the Premier League last season and will now have to balance domestic responsibilities with a European schedule involving several unfamiliar opponents.

Crystal Palace also face an intriguing route after entering the competition as Conference League winners, with Lyon and Real Sociedad among their most notable league-phase opponents.

Crystal Palace Receive Tough European Test

Palace will host Real Sociedad and travel to Lyon, while their other fixtures include Sparta Prague, Red Bull Salzburg, Lech Poznan, Jagiellonia, Hoffenheim and Besiktas.

The London club’s European success last season earned them another continental opportunity, but the new campaign presents a considerably different challenge against clubs with extensive European experience.

A trip to Besiktas will provide another intimidating atmosphere, while home matches against Real Sociedad and Sparta Prague could become important opportunities to collect valuable points.

Celtic have also received a fascinating schedule following their disappointment in the Champions League play-offs, with Marseille and Benfica providing two of the biggest tests.

Celtic Prepare For Benfica And Marseille

Celtic will host Marseille before travelling to Lisbon to meet Benfica, returning to the Portuguese capital where the Scottish giants famously won the European Cup in 1967.

Their remaining opponents are Ferencvaros, Union SG, Celta Vigo, Omonia, Besiktas and Torreense, giving Martin O’Neill’s team a mixture of experienced European opponents and potentially more manageable fixtures.

The Lisbon trip should carry particular emotional significance because Celtic’s historic European triumph came at the same venue, adding another chapter to the club’s remarkable relationship with Benfica.

The four British clubs will now wait for confirmation of exact dates and kick-off times, with those details expected to be announced before the league phase begins.

According to The Independent, the league phase will begin in September, with subsequent matchdays scheduled through October, November, December and January.

European Campaigns Begin In September

The first matchday is scheduled for September 16 and 17, followed by fixtures on October 15, October 22, November 5, November 26 and December 10.

The final two league-phase matchdays will take place in January, with games scheduled for January 21 and January 28, 2027.

The revised European format means every club will face eight different opponents, creating a broader range of challenges compared with the traditional group-stage system.

For Bournemouth, the priority will be adapting quickly to European football while maintaining their Premier League ambitions and making the Vitality Stadium a difficult destination.

Sunderland will hope their supporters can inspire them during their long-awaited return, particularly when the club welcomes opponents before travelling to some of Europe’s most demanding venues.

Crystal Palace enter with confidence after their Conference League success, but their fixtures against Lyon, Real Sociedad, Salzburg and Besiktas demonstrate the scale of the challenge ahead.

Celtic, meanwhile, possess considerable European experience and will hope that their history and home support can help them navigate a schedule containing Marseille, Benfica and Besiktas.

Brighton and Hearts will also represent British football in the Conference League, adding another dimension to the continent’s expanded schedule for clubs from England and Scotland.

Brighton have been drawn against Monaco, Panathinaikos, U Craiova, Getafe, Kauno Zalgiris and Jablonec, while Hearts face Monaco, Pafos, Borac, Trabzonspor, Nordsjaelland and Thun.

Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler believes English clubs can compete successfully in European competitions, saying: “In every cup competition you have chances so of course, in certain moments you need a little bit of luck.”

He added that success also requires “the belief, the confidence to do it”, while acknowledging that the new season would present a different challenge for his Brighton team.

The Europa League fixtures promise compelling contests, historic venues and demanding journeys, with Bournemouth, Sunderland, Crystal Palace and Celtic all targeting strong European campaigns.

For supporters, the prospect of seeing domestic clubs challenge established continental names makes the upcoming league phase particularly exciting, while the results could shape the season for all four teams.

With the fixture dates still to be confirmed, attention will now turn toward preparation, squad depth and the ability of each club to manage the additional demands.

The Europa League draw has ultimately delivered plenty of glamour and competitive intrigue, ensuring British supporters have several European occasions to anticipate when the action begins in September.
