If former President Jonathan decides to run, the current political climate makes it clear that no politician today has the capacity to defeat President Bola Tinubu
Daniel Bwala, the Special Adviser to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Policy Communication, has dismissed claims that any political figure, including former President Goodluck Jonathan, could defeat Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.
He made the remarks during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Wednesday, August 13.
According to Bwala, the ongoing encouragement for Jonathan to re-enter politics is not motivated by genuine public interest but rather by political opportunists aiming to damage his legacy.
“There are elements attempting to lure former President Goodluck Jonathan back into active politics, not to help him, but to harm the reputation he has worked hard to maintain since leaving office,” Bwala explained. He added that Jonathan has, over the years, earned respect internationally for his post-presidential engagements.
Bwala also questioned the credibility of those, particularly from northern Nigeria, who are urging Jonathan to contest the presidency. “Many of the same people who opposed him during his tenure are now encouraging him to run. Can anyone believe their intentions are sincere this time?” he asked.
Highlighting the political scene in southern Nigeria—Jonathan’s home region—Bwala pointed out that support for President Tinubu is growing steadily. He noted that several southern governors and influential political figures have aligned with Tinubu, signaling a significant advantage ahead of the 2027 elections.
He stressed that Jonathan, given his political experience, would recognize the risk of falling into a political trap. “I am confident that President Jonathan will not allow himself to be manipulated by those with hidden agendas. He is smarter than the people trying to convince him otherwise,” Bwala said.
Beyond the discussion of Jonathan, Bwala expressed strong confidence in President Tinubu’s ability to win the next election. “Even if former President Jonathan decides to run, the current political climate makes it clear that no politician today has the capacity to defeat President Bola Tinubu,” he added.
As of now, Jonathan has not made any public declaration about joining the 2027 presidential race. Political watchers continue to monitor the situation closely, noting that any decision from the former president could significantly shape the electoral landscape in the coming years.
Bwala’s comments underscore the intense political maneuvering that often surrounds Nigeria’s elections, highlighting both the influence of established leaders and the strategic calculations of political actors across the country.
