IPOB says its Biafra leadership restructuring is aimed at security and stability, citing internal review, intelligence concerns, and non-violent stance.
The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has announced a major internal restructuring involving its leadership structure, in what it described as a move to strengthen security, stability, and operational discipline within the organisation’s activities linked to the Biafra movement.
The decision affects the Office of the Leader and the position of Director of Radio Biafra, roles previously associated with the group’s detained leader, Nnamdi Kanu.
According to the organisation, the changes form part of a wider effort to reposition its internal governance framework.
Biafra movement and IPOB restructuring decision
The announcement was contained in a statement issued on June 18 by Mazi Chikadibia Edoziem, Head of the Directorate of State (DOS).
He explained that the restructuring was taken after a high-level meeting held on June 17, 2026, where members reviewed internal operations and security concerns affecting the Biafra movement.
He said the decision was necessary to protect members of IPOB globally, particularly those in South-East Nigeria, and to prevent operational risks that could affect the group’s long-term objectives.
According to him, the restructuring reflects a collective decision aimed at safeguarding the organisation’s stability rather than the influence of any individual.

Leadership roles affected in Biafra movement structure
As part of the restructuring, IPOB announced the indefinite suspension of the Office of the Leader and the Director of Radio Biafra, a platform used for communication within the movement.
The organisation clarified that any actions carried out under suspended offices would no longer be attributed to IPOB, but to individuals acting outside its authorised structure.
It also stressed that the Biafra movement remains a collective organisation founded by supporters in the diaspora and should not be viewed as the property of any single leader.
Security concerns and internal intelligence review
The Directorate of State said its decision was informed by internal intelligence reviews and security assessments linked to ongoing developments involving members of the organisation.
It referenced concerns over communications and operational exposure that, according to the group, had previously contributed to arrests and security incidents affecting supporters in parts of the South-East.
The statement also cited fears of emerging plans by unknown actors to establish unauthorised armed structures that could escalate tensions in the region.
Additionally, IPOB referenced reported interactions involving Nnamdi Kanu and Nigerian security agencies, including the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigerian Intelligence Agency (NIA), at Sokoto Prison, stating that such developments were closely monitored and assessed within its internal review process.
IPOB position on Biafra self-determination movement
Despite the restructuring, IPOB reaffirmed its commitment to pursuing self-determination through peaceful and non-violent means.
The organisation stressed that the Biafra movement must remain focused on advocacy and must not engage in activities capable of endangering the lives of the people it claims to represent.
It warned against misrepresentation or unauthorised actions carried out in its name, stating that only approved leadership structures are recognised within its operations.
Rejection of dissolution claims
IPOB also rejected any claims suggesting the dissolution of its Directorate of State, describing such reports as “invalid, null and void.”
It urged members of the public and supporters of the Biafra movement to disregard any declarations not issued through official channels, insisting that the Directorate remains active and functional.
Ongoing internal review in Biafra movement
The organisation concluded that the leadership restructuring will remain in effect indefinitely, pending further internal review and reassessment of its security and administrative framework.
It added that the ongoing process is part of efforts to maintain unity, prevent internal breaches, and ensure that the Biafra movement continues to operate within its stated non-violent objectives.
