Gov Sule explains why APC Governors are calm amid Fubara impeachment talks

Governor Abdullahi Sule says APC governors are not worried about Rivers Governor Fubara’s impeachment, emphasizing courts and due process guide the situation.

The governor of Nasarawa State, Abdullahi Sule, has reassured that he and other governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) are not concerned about the ongoing impeachment process involving Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, who recently defected to their party.

Fubara impeachment

Governor Sule’s comments come at a time when political observers have been closely watching developments in Rivers State, especially in light of Fubara’s defection and the subsequent calls for his removal from office.

In an interview with Channels TV on Thursday, January 29, Governor Sule was asked whether he and his APC colleagues were anxious about the possibility of Fubara being impeached.

Responding to the inquiry, Sule emphasized that the impeachment process is strictly governed by the law and that there are procedural safeguards in place to ensure fairness.

“I’m not worried because I think it’s an issue for the courts. You don’t just wake up and impeach someone without following due process.

“Of course, we are concerned whenever anything happens to any of our colleagues, but we are not worried to the extent of assuming that he [Fubara] will be impeached,” Sule said.

The governor further highlighted the role of the judiciary in guiding the impeachment process.

He noted that court rulings and actions taken by the chief judge of Rivers State have already provided clarity and direction on the matter.

“From all indications, actions are being taken. Courts are making decisions, and the chief judge is taking a position on this. So, for that reason, we are not worried,” Sule added.

Governor Sule’s remarks underscore the delicate balance between political interests and legal frameworks in Nigeria.

The ongoing impeachment process in Rivers State has attracted national attention, as political analysts weigh the implications of removing a sitting governor who recently switched party allegiance.

While defections are common in Nigerian politics, they often trigger legal and legislative controversies, as is the case with Fubara’s defection to the APC.

Political commentators have noted that the impeachment process against Governor Fubara, which was initiated by the Rivers State House of Assembly, centers on allegations of gross misconduct.

However, the State High Court recently intervened, putting the process on hold.

Legal experts argue that this intervention demonstrates the judiciary’s role in ensuring that any attempt to remove a sitting governor follows constitutional procedures and does not undermine democratic principles.

For APC governors like Sule, the matter appears to be more procedural than political.

The focus, according to the Nasarawa governor, is on allowing the legal system to function without unnecessary interference or speculation.

“We are not worried about anybody being impeached arbitrarily. Every action is guided by law, and the courts are taking the necessary steps. That is what matters,” Sule stated.

The issue of Governor Fubara’s defection to the APC has also sparked discussions about party loyalty and political realignments in Nigeria.

Defections, while constitutionally permitted, often prompt political parties and legislatures to reassess their positions, leading to attempts at impeachment or other forms of political sanction.

Sule’s assurance that APC governors are calm about the situation reflects a broader commitment to respecting the judicial process, even in politically sensitive circumstances.

Observers note that the Rivers State House of Assembly’s push for impeachment could have wider implications for the APC at both state and national levels.

Removing a sitting governor through a process that follows legal procedures may set a precedent for other states where party defections are a source of tension.

By highlighting the role of the courts and the chief judge, Governor Sule signaled confidence that the matter will be resolved in accordance with constitutional principles, without destabilizing the political environment.

Governor Fubara’s political trajectory, including his recent switch to the APC, has made him a central figure in ongoing debates about party dynamics and governance in Nigeria.

As one of the newer members of the APC governors’ forum, Fubara’s experience may influence discussions on party cohesion, intergovernmental relations, and the management of political disputes within states.

Sule’s emphasis on the impeachment process being guided by law sends a clear message: legal procedures, not partisan reactions, should determine political outcomes.

In conclusion, Governor Abdullahi Sule’s comments reflect a cautious but confident approach to political controversies involving party defections and the impeachment process.

By trusting the judiciary and the rule of law, APC governors aim to maintain stability while respecting democratic norms.

As the legal and legislative processes continue in Rivers State, the nation watches closely to see how Governor Fubara’s case unfolds and how it might influence political strategies across the country.
