The All Progressives Congress (APC) has challenged the outcome of Saturday’s Anambra South Senatorial bye-election, raising concerns over alleged intimidation and harassment of its supporters during the voting process.
The APC candidate, Sir Azuka Okwuosa, claimed that government agents disrupted the ability of party members and voters to freely exercise their rights, which he said affected the overall election fairness.
“The battle is not yet over,” Okwuosa declared shortly after announcing the results.
“My party and I will convene to carefully review the entire process and determine the next steps to ensure justice and transparency.”
He emphasised that, despite these challenges, the electorate demonstrated determination to participate in the democratic exercise, but external pressures and intimidation hindered their full engagement.
On the other hand, Emmanuel Nwachukwu, the declared winner of the bye-election, acknowledged the concerns raised by his opponents but reaffirmed the legitimacy of his victory.
Speaking to journalists shortly after the results were announced, Nwachukwu expressed profound gratitude to Governor Chukwuma Soludo and the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) family, attributing his success to their tireless support and strategic efforts throughout the campaign.
Nwachukwu also commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for conducting a smooth, free, and fair election.
He described the victory as a triumph for the people of the Anambra South Senatorial zone. He pledged to continue the legacy of the late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, promising to prioritise development, social welfare, and community-focused initiatives.
“This win is for the people of Anambra South, and I remain committed to advancing their interests in the Senate,” he said.
Looking ahead, Nwachukwu outlined APGA’s broader agenda, highlighting the party’s focus on the November 8 governorship election.
He expressed confidence in Governor Soludo’s leadership and the party’s unity, noting that APGA is well-positioned to maintain its stronghold in the state.
“Our next priority is the governorship election, and we are ready to deliver another victory for our party and the people of Anambra,” he added.
While APGA celebrates its victory, APC’s challenge signals that the race remains highly contested. Both parties are poised to scrutinise the election process and mobilise supporters for future political contests.
