Alaafin of Oyo honours Ooni of Ife’s 10th anniversary, urging deeper traditional unity among Yoruba monarchs while praising the Ooni’s leadership, wisdom and peaceful reign.
The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade, has extended heartfelt congratulations to the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, as he marks ten remarkable years on the throne, describing the period as a decade defined by honour, purpose and an enduring commitment to traditional unity.

The Alaafin made this known in a formal statement issued through his Director of Media and Publicity, Bode Durojaiye, where he celebrated the Ooni’s achievements and used the occasion to advocate for stronger bonds among Yoruba traditional rulers.
According to the statement, the Alaafin joined other royal fathers, the people of Oyo Kingdom, indigenes of Ile-Ife, and the Government and citizens of Osun State in celebrating a monarch he described as visionary, compassionate and deeply rooted in cultural heritage.
Oba Owoade emphasized that the Ooni’s decade-long reign has brought renewed dignity to the Yoruba monarchy, fostering both cultural revival and social stability.
Reflecting on the Ooni’s leadership style, the Alaafin praised his “calm, wise, and people-focused approach to kingship,” describing it as a model for other traditional leaders across Nigeria.
He highlighted the Ooni’s dedication to promoting peace, harmony, and cultural identity, noting that such traits are essential not only to Ile-Ife but to the entire Yoruba race.
He stressed that rulers who lead with patience, emotional intelligence and a deep respect for ancestral values naturally inspire unity within their domains.
Oba Owoade spoke extensively about the impact of gratitude and purposeful leadership, noting that moments of celebration such as this anniversary offer opportunities for reflection. “Gratitude,” he said, “is one of the most powerful elements of leadership.
“It opens the heart to the good around us and inspires a sense of reverence for the journey so far.”
He emphasised that the Ooni’s decade of service deserves not only celebration but appreciation for the countless lives, communities and institutions his leadership has touched.
He added that everyday moments of insight—what he called “epiphanies of leadership”—often arise from gratitude and recognition of one’s role in shaping society.
The Alaafin described the Ooni’s reign as one marked by such epiphanies, especially as the monarch navigates the complexities of modern Nigeria while upholding ancient Yoruba values.
As part of his message, the Alaafin used the occasion to call for enhanced cooperation among traditional rulers.
He emphasized that much of the progress expected within Yoruba land and the wider Nigerian federation depends on a solid foundation of unity.
According to him, no kingdom thrives in isolation, and no monarch can fully fulfil cultural responsibilities without collaboration with fellow royal fathers.
He emphasized that traditional unity remains the backbone of cultural preservation and peaceful coexistence.
Oba Owoade outlined three fundamental duties of traditional rulers—preserving peace, protecting culture, and upholding ancestral traditions.
These responsibilities, he said, transcend political cycles, religious differences, or modern pressures.
“Kings are not religious leaders,” he said plainly.
“We are custodians of legacies handed over to us through centuries of heritage. Our duty is to ensure these legacies remain alive and relevant.”
He explained that unity among monarchs is not merely symbolic; it is a practical tool for driving development, conflict resolution and cultural protection.
He described unity as a product of mutual trust, shared values and genuine collaboration. He encouraged royal fathers to cultivate open communication, respectful relationships and a renewed sense of collective identity.
The Alaafin also spoke about tolerance as a necessary ingredient for unity, noting that diversity—whether cultural, ethnic, religious or ideological—should be embraced rather than feared.
He stated that monarchs must be examples of patience and understanding, especially in times when the country faces socio-economic challenges that heighten divisions.
“Our differences,” he said, “should never stand in the way of peace, progress or cooperation.”
Linking his message to national development, the Alaafin observed that Nigeria’s federal structure thrives only when unity in diversity is nurtured at every level.
He explained that traditional unity among Yoruba monarchs can serve as a model for other cultural regions, ultimately strengthening national integration.
He described Nigeria as a “complex mosaic of identities” that requires deliberate efforts to maintain cohesion.
The Alaafin stressed that federations across the world rely on shared values, constructive dialogue and respect for differences to remain stable.
In his view, Yoruba traditional institutions must continue to play their part by building bridges, resolving conflicts and promoting cultural harmony.
He warned that ignoring unity could weaken not only cultural institutions but also the broader aspirations of the Yoruba race.
Returning to the main purpose of his message, Oba Owoade once more celebrated the Ooni of Ife, describing him as a symbol of resilience and cultural pride.
He praised the Ooni for elevating Yoruba culture on global platforms, strengthening ties among traditional institutions, and providing guidance in moments of national uncertainty.
He noted that the Ooni’s spiritual and cultural influence extends beyond Ile-Ife, resonating across Yoruba land and the Nigerian nation.
