Peter Obi promises to pay NECO fees for 148 inmates in Anambra

Peter Obi pledges to cover NECO fees for 148 Anambra inmates, ensuring access to exams and supporting education as a tool for rehabilitation.

The 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate and former governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, has stepped forward with a commitment to pay the National Examinations Council (NECO) fees for 148 inmates currently enrolled in correctional facilities across the State.

This bold initiative, aimed at supporting inmates’ education and rehabilitation, comes at a time when access to quality learning opportunities remains limited for incarcerated individuals in Nigeria.

By settling these fees, Obi seeks to ensure that all eligible inmates can sit for their NECO examinations without interruption, reinforcing the transformative power of education.

Obi’s pledge followed a visit from a delegation representing inmates from four correctional facilities: Awka, Onitsha, Nnewi, and Aguata.

The delegation explained that some candidates were in danger of being excluded from the ongoing NECO examinations because they could not afford the required registration and logistics fees.

According to the figures presented, Awka has 50 candidates, Onitsha 36, Nnewi 25, and Aguata 37, making a total of 148 inmates.

Each candidate is expected to pay ₦30,050 for registration and an additional ₦2,000 to cover logistical costs, bringing the total per candidate to ₦32,050.

Cumulatively, this amounts to ₦4,741,400. Recognizing the critical importance of ensuring these inmates do not miss out on the examinations, Obi assured the delegation that he would personally cover the expenses.

He further stated that he would collaborate with his supporters and associates to raise any additional resources needed to facilitate the process.

“I will write to the representatives on Monday to confirm that the fees will be paid so that the inmates can continue with their NECO examinations without any disruption,” Obi declared.

His assurance reflects a strong commitment to promoting access to education for marginalized and incarcerated groups, reinforcing the idea that correctional facilities should prioritize rehabilitation over mere punishment.

Education has long been recognized as one of the most effective tools for rehabilitation, and Obi stressed that inmates must be provided with opportunities to acquire knowledge and skills that can help them reintegrate into society successfully.

Correctional centres, he noted, should function as institutions for reform and personal development, where individuals can gain the tools necessary to lead productive lives after their release.

Obi cited his recent visit to California State University, Sacramento, where he observed initiatives like the Guidance Scholars Programme and Project Rebound.

These programs provide structured support to vulnerable and formerly incarcerated individuals, helping them pursue higher education and meaningful careers.

He emphasized that similar frameworks are urgently needed in Nigeria to give inmates a fair chance at education and personal growth.

The former governor highlighted the broader societal impact of inmate education, noting that insufficient educational opportunities, combined with economic challenges, often contribute to the cycle of incarceration.

“When individuals complete their terms, they must be equipped to contribute positively to themselves and to society,” he said.

By supporting NECO participation for inmates, Obi is advocating for a system where education serves as a bridge between confinement and meaningful reintegration into the community.

This initiative also underscores a growing awareness of the importance of rehabilitation-focused correctional policies in Nigeria.

While prison terms are meant to serve as both deterrent and punishment, Obi argues that without adequate access to education, vocational training, and personal development programs, many inmates are released ill-prepared to navigate the social and economic challenges awaiting them outside the correctional system.

Beyond the immediate benefit of covering NECO fees, Obi’s pledge sends a broader message about the value of education as a tool for empowerment.

NECO examinations are a critical step for many individuals in furthering their academic and professional aspirations.

For inmates, the opportunity to take these exams represents not only academic achievement but also a chance to redefine their personal narratives and pursue a future beyond incarceration.

The 148 inmates who will benefit from Obi’s support include young men and women who have shown resilience and determination in pursuing education despite challenging circumstances.

By addressing the financial barrier that could have prevented them from sitting for NECO examinations, Obi is fostering an environment where reform, hope, and opportunity are tangible realities within Anambra correctional centres.

In addition to covering the NECO fees, Obi highlighted the importance of continuous support and mentorship for inmates.

Programs that combine education with counseling, vocational training, and life skills development are essential to breaking the cycle of recidivism.

By prioritizing education in the prison system, the former governor contends that inmates can develop the confidence, knowledge, and skills needed to become productive citizens upon release.
