Akwa Ibom Police arrest four suspects over the alleged mob killing of Emmanuel Effiong, whose body was buried in a shallow grave after theft accusations.
The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested four men allegedly involved in the brutal mob killing of a 21-year-old resident, Emmanuel Effiong, whose body was secretly buried in a shallow grave after he was accused of stealing chickens and eggs from a poultry farm.
The arrests mark a significant development in an investigation that has attracted widespread attention after a disturbing video of the assault surfaced online.
Police authorities say the suspects are now in custody while investigations continue to uncover the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
According to a statement released by the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Timfon John, the investigation began on June 17, 2026, after detectives received credible intelligence alongside a viral video that allegedly captured the victim being violently attacked by several individuals.
The footage reportedly showed Emmanuel lying helpless in a pool of blood with both his hands and legs tied. Moments later, he was seen being dragged across the ground beside a white Mitsubishi pick-up van, a scene that generated outrage on social media and prompted calls for justice.
Investigators said the victim had earlier been accused of stealing chickens and eggs from a poultry farm located in Mbak 4 Community in Uyo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State. Rather than reporting the alleged theft to law enforcement agencies, those involved allegedly resorted to mob action.
Police allege that Emmanuel was repeatedly beaten with sticks and machetes during the attack. The assault reportedly continued until he succumbed to his injuries, turning what began as an allegation of theft into a case of suspected murder.
The investigation further revealed that after the victim died, the suspects allegedly attempted to hide evidence of the crime.
According to police findings, Emmanuel’s hands and legs were tied before his body was dragged through the community and abandoned at a nearby junction for approximately two days.
Authorities said the suspects later placed the corpse on a wheelbarrow and transported it into a nearby forest, where they dug a shallow grave and buried the body in an effort to conceal the incident from security agencies and the public.
Acting on intelligence gathered during the investigation, police operatives arrested four principal suspects identified as David Okon, also known as Ita, aged 45; Joseph Gibson, 39; Essien Solomon, 23; and Imoh Asuquo, 28.
According to the Command, the suspects made confessional statements during interrogation, admitting to their respective roles in the incident.
Police said the confessions assisted investigators in locating the burial site within the forest at Mbak 4 Community.
The remains of Emmanuel Effiong were subsequently exhumed and transferred to a morgue, where an autopsy is expected to determine the exact medical cause of death and provide additional forensic evidence for prosecution.
Detectives also recovered several exhibits believed to be connected to the crime.
Among the items recovered were the white Mitsubishi pick-up van allegedly used during the incident, the wheelbarrow used to transport the victim’s body, and the sticks and machetes suspected to have been used in carrying out the fatal assault.
The Commissioner of Police in Akwa Ibom State, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, condemned the incident, describing mob justice as a dangerous and unlawful practice that undermines the country’s criminal justice system.
He stressed that no individual or community has the legal authority to punish or execute anyone based on mere suspicion, regardless of the nature of the allegation.
According to him, every Nigerian is entitled to the constitutional right of fair hearing and due process before a competent court of law.
The police chief urged members of the public to report suspected criminals to the appropriate security agencies rather than taking matters into their own hands.
He warned that anyone found participating in mob attacks or extrajudicial killings would face the full weight of the law.
Azare also assured residents that the Command remains committed to identifying and prosecuting every person connected to the killing, regardless of their position or influence within the community.
He said investigations are still ongoing and additional arrests may be made if further evidence emerges.
The case has once again renewed concerns over the persistent problem of jungle justice in parts of Nigeria, where suspects are sometimes assaulted or killed before law enforcement authorities have the opportunity to investigate allegations against them.
Human rights advocates have consistently warned that such actions violate the rule of law and often result in innocent people losing their lives.
With four suspects already in custody and critical evidence recovered, police say they are determined to ensure justice is served for Emmanuel Effiong while reinforcing the message that criminal allegations must always be handled through lawful procedures rather than mob violence.
