Governor Umo Eno announces ban on masquerade in Akwa Ibom State to prevent criminal attacks and safeguard residents across all communities.
Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, has declared an indefinite ban on masquerade, following a surge in attacks where criminals disguised themselves as traditional performers to terrorise communities.
The governor said the decision was necessary to safeguard residents and restore peace across the state.
Speaking at a recent state event, Governor Eno clarified that the ban on masquerade targets those using cultural costumes for criminal purposes, not legitimate cultural celebrations.
“In my capacity as Governor and Chief Security Officer of Akwa Ibom State, I am issuing an order: anyone caught using masquerades to commit crimes will be arrested and prosecuted. This action is critical to ensure the safety of our citizens,” he stated.
The governor directed security agencies to enforce the ban on masquerade strictly. The state’s Commissioner of Police and heads of other security agencies have been ordered to arrest and prosecute violators without exception.
“We will not allow our cultural heritage to be exploited for violent acts. Public safety comes first,” Governor Eno added.
Residents were urged to cooperate with authorities by reporting any suspicious masquerade activities.
“Peace must prevail. Communities must be safe. The ban on masquerade is effective immediately, and anyone participating in unlawful masquerade activities will face legal consequences,” he emphasised.
The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has raised concerns over a rise in masquerade-related criminal incidents.
Commissioner of Police Baba Azare confirmed that several suspects have already been arrested and are facing prosecution for using masquerade disguises to commit robberies, assaults, and other violent acts.
Local government authorities and community leaders are assisting law enforcement to ensure compliance with the ban on masquerade.
Residents are being educated about the distinction between cultural masquerade practices and criminal masquerade impersonators.
Cultural experts have praised the move, stressing that protecting citizens must take precedence over tradition when criminal elements are involved.
“The governor’s decision carefully balances cultural heritage with public safety,” said Dr. Essien Okon, a historian and cultural commentator.
“It is necessary to prevent masquerades from being misused as a tool for crime and violence.”
The indefinite ban on masquerade will remain in effect until authorities determine that the security situation has sufficiently improved.
