The AFRICOM–NDLEA partnership is gaining momentum as U.S. officials reaffirm support for Nigeria’s anti-drug war and broader regional security efforts.
Nigeria’s campaign against illicit drugs received renewed international backing on Tuesday as senior officials from the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) held high-level talks with the leadership of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Abuja.
The meeting underscored the growing importance of cross-border collaboration in tackling drug trafficking and its links to organized crime and terrorism.
The delegation was received by the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the NDLEA, Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), whose tenure has been marked by aggressive reforms, enhanced enforcement, and stronger global cooperation.
According to the NDLEA, the visit was part of ongoing engagements aimed at deepening the AFRICOM–NDLEA partnership, which both sides described as strategic and mutually beneficial.
A statement released by the agency’s Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, revealed that discussions focused on operational support, intelligence sharing, capacity building, and long-term sustainability of joint initiatives.
The U.S. officials praised Nigeria’s anti-drug agency for its growing effectiveness and commitment to international best practices.
Leading the U.S. delegation was Philip Esch, the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Liaison to AFRICOM.
In his remarks, Esch emphasized that the relationship between the NDLEA and U.S. law enforcement agencies goes beyond routine cooperation, describing it as a critical alliance that directly supports U.S. and global security interests.
He commended Marwa’s leadership, noting that his openness to international collaboration has strengthened trust and efficiency across joint operations.
Esch said the AFRICOM–NDLEA partnership remains a priority for the U.S. government, adding that American agencies value the professionalism and accountability demonstrated by the Nigerian drug control body.
The U.S. official also congratulated Marwa on the renewal of his appointment for another five-year term, expressing confidence that the continuity in leadership would further solidify ongoing reforms.
He assured the NDLEA of continued engagement and support, stressing that sustained cooperation is essential in disrupting transnational drug networks.
Another member of the delegation, James Elseth, highlighted the broader regional impact of NDLEA’s operations.
According to him, Nigeria’s fight against narcotics has implications that extend far beyond its borders, contributing to stability across West Africa and beyond.
He noted that drug trafficking networks often operate across multiple countries, making international coordination indispensable.
Elseth praised the NDLEA for adopting a regional and global outlook in its operations, a quality he said distinguishes the agency from others that focus solely on domestic concerns.
Drawing parallels with agencies such as the DEA and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), he said the shared international mindset makes collaboration more effective in combating organized crime.
He also acknowledged the NDLEA’s commitment to maintaining equipment and facilities previously supplied by the U.S. government.
This, he said, reflects institutional discipline and accountability, which are crucial for long-term partnerships.
Elseth disclosed that two major support projects were already underway to further strengthen the agency, alongside continuous training and technical assistance.
Responding, Marwa expressed gratitude for the visit and the sustained backing provided by AFRICOM over the years.
He described the AFRICOM–NDLEA partnership as instrumental to the agency’s recent successes, noting that international support has complemented internal reforms and boosted operational capacity.
Marwa attributed the agency’s progress not only to foreign assistance but also to the commitment of NDLEA personnel and the political will demonstrated by the current administration under President Bola Tinubu.
He said the administration’s “Renewed Hope” agenda has provided encouragement and institutional backing for security agencies to perform their duties effectively.
The NDLEA boss drew attention to the increasingly dangerous connection between illicit drugs and terrorism, warning that narcotics trafficking often serves as a funding channel for extremist activities.
He urged AFRICOM and other international partners to sustain and expand their support, stressing that weakening drug networks is key to addressing broader security threats.
In outlining priority needs, Marwa identified advanced airport scanning systems, digital forensic tools, portable drug detection devices, modern forensic laboratory equipment, and trained sniffer dogs as critical areas requiring assistance.
According to him, these resources would significantly enhance surveillance, detection, and prosecution efforts.
He reiterated that strengthening Nigeria’s drug control infrastructure would not only protect the country but also contribute to regional and global security.
As criminal networks become more sophisticated, he said, partnerships like the AFRICOM–NDLEA partnership remain vital in staying ahead of emerging threats.
The meeting ended on a note of mutual commitment, with both sides reaffirming their resolve to deepen collaboration.
