An Abuja-Kaduna train service experienced an unexpected operational incident on Monday morning after a locomotive made contact with a passenger coach near Asham Station, leaving several passengers injured and causing temporary disruption to the rail schedule.
The Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation, Kayode Opeifa, confirmed the development in an official statement issued shortly after the event.
According to him, the incident occurred at approximately 10:30 a.m. along the busy rail corridor linking Nigeria’s capital city to Kaduna State.
Opeifa explained that the situation involved a technical problem affecting the train’s coupling mechanism.
Preliminary findings indicate that the rear locomotive came into contact with the coach immediately attached to it after the coupling system malfunctioned.
The contact caused a sudden jolt that was felt by passengers inside the train.
Despite the impact, railway authorities confirmed that the Abuja-Kaduna train continued its journey after emergency procedures were carried out and the affected components were removed from the track.
Passengers who sustained injuries were quickly attended to by emergency responders.
The railway management stated that medical teams provided immediate assistance before transporting the injured individuals to a nearby healthcare facility for proper treatment.
Officials emphasized that while several passengers suffered cuts and minor injuries, no deaths were recorded.
The Abuja-Kaduna rail service eventually arrived at Idu Station in Abuja at around 10:39 a.m., approximately 38 minutes later than its scheduled arrival time.
The delay occurred because railway engineers had to detach the damaged locomotive and a passenger coach identified as SP 0006 before allowing the train to proceed safely.
Authorities said the prompt activation of safety protocols helped prevent the situation from escalating into a more serious accident.
Technical teams from the railway corporation were deployed immediately to the scene to secure the track and assess the extent of the damage.
Meanwhile, the Safety Investigation Bureau (SIB) has begun a detailed investigation to determine the precise cause of the mechanical fault that triggered the incident.
The bureau is expected to analyze the train’s mechanical systems, operational procedures, and maintenance records to ensure such occurrences are prevented in the future.
Rail transport has become an increasingly important travel option in Nigeria, particularly along the Abuja-Kaduna corridor, which is widely used by commuters, government workers, and business travelers seeking a safer alternative to road transport.
As a result, incidents involving the rail line often attract significant public attention.

Although the corporation confirmed that passengers were injured, it did not immediately disclose the exact number of those affected or the total number of travelers on board the train at the time of the incident.
Eyewitnesses who were present during the event described a moment of panic when the train abruptly stopped.
One passenger, Sada Malumfashi, shared his experience on the social media platform X shortly after disembarking from the Abuja-Kaduna train.
According to his account, passengers heard a loud noise before the train suddenly jerked to a halt.
The abrupt movement reportedly caused several passengers to lose their balance, with some being thrown against seats and interior fittings.
Malumfashi also posted photographs showing bent metal sections and areas where parts of the train appeared to have shifted from their original position.
He claimed that some passengers suffered visible cuts and bleeding following the impact.
“Just dropped from the Kaduna-Abuja train,” he wrote in his post.
“We heard a loud bang and the train jolted to a stop, flinging people across. Some passengers were injured and bleeding. The train was delayed for some time before it continued toward Kubwa.”
Despite the alarming description from witnesses, railway authorities reiterated that the situation was quickly brought under control and that emergency teams responded promptly.
The Abuja-Kaduna rail corridor has played a critical role in Nigeria’s transportation network since it was inaugurated as one of the country’s modern standard-gauge railway lines.
Over the years, it has provided a faster and more reliable travel option between the two cities.
Following the latest incident, transportation analysts say the ongoing investigation will be important in determining whether the problem resulted from mechanical failure, operational oversight, or routine wear in the coupling system.
