Suspected armed men launched a terrifying abduction at the Celestial Church of Christ (CCC) parish in Uso, Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State during a late-night service on Tuesday.
According to eyewitnesses, the attackers stormed the church, located along the busy Owo/Benin Expressway, and forcefully took worshippers to an undisclosed location, leaving the congregation in shock.
Community sources said the attack came unexpectedly during the church programme, with worshippers caught entirely off guard.
Five congregants were initially reported abducted, but one managed to escape shortly after the incident, providing authorities with crucial information on the attackers’ movements and strategies.
Confirming the incident on Wednesday, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Jimoh Abayomi, stated that six worshippers were eventually counted as victims of the abduction.
“Upon receiving the report, operatives of the command, in collaboration with the Nigerian Army and local vigilante groups, immediately mobilised to the scene and commenced coordinated rescue operations,” Abayomi said.
He added that sustained joint efforts by security personnel had already led to the rescue of one victim and the arrest of a suspect connected to the abduction.
“One suspect linked to the incident has been arrested and has made useful statements that are assisting the ongoing investigation.
“Security operations are ongoing to ensure the safe rescue of the remaining victims and the apprehension of all perpetrators involved,” Abayomi noted.
The police spokesman urged residents to remain calm, vigilant, and proactive in providing credible and actionable information that could help security agencies prevent further attacks.
Local leaders in Uso and surrounding communities have also called for heightened security, warning that the rising wave of gunmen attacks threatens public safety and community stability.
