The Swali protest erupted in Yenagoa as youths demanded justice over the killing of Ekowe Polytechnic student Clever Abadi, prompting police arrests and investigations.
The Swali protest that unfolded in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital, has once again drawn attention to rising concerns over youth safety and public violence within commercial hubs.
The demonstration followed the killing of a student of Ekowe Polytechnic, Clever Charles Abadi, whose death has sparked outrage across communities in the state.
Abadi, a native of Ekowe community and a student of the state-owned institution, was reportedly attacked and beaten to death at the bustling Swali market.
Although details surrounding the incident are still emerging, eyewitness accounts indicate that the confrontation occurred during market hours, intensifying public shock and anger over the tragic outcome.
In response, scores of youths from the Swali axis and neighboring communities mobilised early in the day to stage a protest, demanding justice for the slain student.
The Yenagoa youths protest disrupted normal activities as demonstrators blocked major access roads and temporarily shut down trading activities in the area.
Carrying placards with inscriptions calling for accountability, the protesters marched through strategic locations within Swali, chanting solidarity songs and condemning acts of violence against young people.
Many of the demonstrators described the incident as one too many, insisting that authorities must act decisively to prevent a repeat.
Several protesters expressed frustration over what they described as a growing culture of impunity, particularly within crowded marketplaces.
According to them, the Swali protest was not only about Abadi’s death but also a broader call for improved security and justice for victims of violent crimes in Bayelsa State.
Reacting to the incident, the Bayelsa State Police Command confirmed the killing and disclosed that swift action had been taken.
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Musa Mohammed, stated that the Command received reports of the incident and immediately launched an investigation.
DSP Mohammed revealed that four suspects have been arrested in connection with the killing of Clever Charles Abadi.
He identified them as Musa Abdullahi, James Peter, Godbless Joel, and Peremobowei Perepuighegha.
According to him, the suspects are currently in custody and assisting investigators as efforts continue to unravel the circumstances surrounding the student’s death.
The police spokesperson emphasised that the Bayelsa State Police would ensure that justice is served, stressing that the law would take its full course regardless of the status or background of those involved.
He reassured the public that the Command is committed to upholding law and order while protecting lives and property.
Addressing concerns raised during the Swali protest, DSP Mohammed also warned against the spread of unverified information.
He specifically cautioned residents against circulating rumours suggesting that the killing was carried out by individuals from a particular region or ethnic group.
According to him, such narratives could inflame tensions and undermine peaceful coexistence within the state.
He urged members of the public to always verify information through official police channels before making public claims or sharing sensitive details.
The police further confirmed that calm has been restored to the Swali area following the intervention of security personnel.
Markets and roads that were earlier blocked during the protest have since been reopened, allowing commercial activities to resume.
Community leaders within Yenagoa have also appealed for restraint, calling on youths to allow the police investigation to run its course.
Some leaders described the killing as deeply unfortunate, noting that violence only deepens communal wounds and delays justice.
The death of Clever Charles Abadi has reignited conversations around student safety, youth vulnerability, and conflict management in public spaces.
Residents have called on market unions, community associations, and security agencies to work together to prevent disputes from escalating into deadly confrontations.
As investigations continue, the Bayelsa State Police Command has reiterated its appeal for cooperation from the public.
Authorities have assured residents that transparency will be maintained throughout the process and that updates will be provided as new developments emerge.
