Jibrin challenges Kano Governor over security mismanagement, urging focused governance, strong leadership, and collaboration to address growing insecurity in the state.
The Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, has issued a stern warning to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State, urging him to stop politicising security matters and instead focus on implementing practical solutions to the growing insecurity in the state.
According to Jibrin, the persistent security challenges in Kano, including banditry and violent crimes, require responsible governance and collaborative efforts from all stakeholders.
This warning followed claims by the Kano State Government suggesting that Jibrin’s recent statements could interfere with ongoing security operations.
The allegations were raised after the 34th State Executive Council meeting, chaired by Governor Yusuf, where the state government expressed concern over perceived interference by federal legislators in state-level security affairs.
In response, Senator Jibrin strongly rejected the claims, describing them as baseless and politically motivated.
In a statement released by his media aide, Ismail Mudashir, he called on the state government to provide any video or audio evidence showing that his remarks could worsen insecurity.
“At no point did Senator Jibrin make statements that could undermine security operations in Kano.
“On the contrary, he has consistently collaborated with security agencies and other stakeholders to address insecurity in the state and across Nigeria,” the statement read.
Jibrin also highlighted the dangers of politicising security, noting that turning critical safety issues into political arguments only undermines collective efforts.
“Security is a responsibility that transcends politics. Every leader must focus on protecting citizens rather than scoring political points,” he said.
Beyond the verbal warnings, Senator Jibrin detailed several practical steps he has taken to strengthen Kano’s security landscape.
He has provided operational vehicles to police formations across his senatorial district and other parts of the state, and supplied motorcycles to officers in Kano North to enhance mobility and rapid response.
He has also renovated sections of the Kano State Police Headquarters and constructed police stations in various local government areas.
His contributions are not limited to the police alone. Jibrin has also supported the Department of State Services (DSS) and facilitated the creation of training institutions aimed at building capacity for Nigeria’s security agencies.
Notable among these initiatives are the NSCDC training college in Gwarzo, the Nigeria Police Service Commission training institute in Kabo, and the Nigeria Immigration Service training school in Bichi, all of which are under construction.
Additionally, Senator Jibrin has installed solar-powered streetlights across his senatorial district and other key areas, significantly enhancing nighttime security patrols.
He stressed that these initiatives demonstrate his commitment to tangible improvements rather than empty rhetoric, and urged the state government to emulate these efforts instead of issuing false accusations.
According to Jibrin, Kano State has the resources and human capital to restore its past prominence as one of Nigeria’s most prosperous and secure regions.
However, he lamented that mismanagement and political distractions have stalled progress, leaving the state vulnerable to insecurity.
“Until governance receives the attention it deserves, Kano will continue to face challenges that could otherwise be mitigated with proactive leadership,” he said.
He urged Governor Yusuf to wake up from political complacency and assume full responsibility for the administration of the state.
“Our state has everything needed to regain its historic glory. But leadership requires action, not excuses,” Jibrin emphasized.
Senator Jibrin concluded by reaffirming his commitment to working with security agencies, community leaders, and other stakeholders to strengthen Kano’s security architecture.
He reiterated that public safety must always take precedence over political disputes, and warned that politicising security could have dangerous consequences for citizens.
