The Night of the Abduction

On Monday, September 29, 2025, around 8 p.m., Basheerah Ojedeyi was reportedly kidnapped by armed men while traveling through Niger State on her way home.

The young graduate had just concluded her induction ceremony — a moment meant to launch her professional career — when tragedy struck.

Witnesses said the kidnappers intercepted the vehicle she boarded, whisking her away to an unknown destination.

What should have been a joyful journey of achievement became a traumatic ordeal that sent shockwaves across UDUS and her home state, Osun.

Ransom Demand and Tense Negotiations

Hours after her abduction, the kidnappers contacted Basheerah Ojedeyi’s family, demanding a staggering ₦200 million ransom.

The abductors refused to reveal her whereabouts or physical condition, intensifying her family’s distress. Negotiations were described as tense and emotionally draining, stretching over several days.

The situation triggered outrage and sympathy nationwide. Student unions, advocacy groups, and Nigerians on social media united under hashtags such as #FreeBasheerah and #JusticeForBasheerah, demanding urgent government intervention. Messages of solidarity poured in from her colleagues, mentors, and even strangers, all praying for her safe return.

Nationwide Support and Advocacy

During the ordeal, the National Association of Osun State Students (NAOSS) and other youth bodies launched awareness campaigns, prayer sessions, and petitions to authorities. Their persistent efforts helped keep Basheerah Ojedeyi’s case in the public eye.

Her classmates described her as an intelligent, humble, and hardworking individual, noting that she excelled academically and was deeply passionate about healthcare delivery. Many said her abduction reflected the growing danger faced by students and professionals traveling across Nigeria’s highways.

Freedom After Weeks in Captivity

Relief finally came when Basheerah Ojedeyi regained her freedom on October 13, 2025. The news was officially confirmed the following day by the National Association of Osun State Students, Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto Chapter (NAOSS-UDUS).

In a statement signed by President Adedamola Adam Oluwafisola and General Secretary Olarinde Sodiq Opeyemi, the association expressed profound gratitude to all Nigerians who supported efforts toward her release.

“We owe the good people of Nigeria an eternal gratitude and appreciation for supporting and hastening the release of Radiographer Ojedeyi Basheerah,” the statement read.

“We pray that no Nigerian ever witnesses such trauma again, and may God watch over everyone.”

Though details of the negotiation remain undisclosed, the announcement sparked nationwide joy and thanksgiving. Students at UDUS organized a prayer and thanksgiving gathering, praising God for her safe return.

Her classmates and lecturers described the experience as a painful but unifying episode. One colleague said, “Basheerah is a shining example of resilience. Her courage reminds us that faith and unity can overcome fear.”

Family members also expressed deep gratitude to everyone who stood by them. A relative, speaking anonymously, said, “We never lost faith. The prayers and love from people we didn’t even know gave us strength.”

Security experts, however, have raised concerns over the recurring cases of abduction targeting students and professionals in Nigeria.

They argue that Basheerah Ojedeyi’s case underscores the urgent need for authorities to improve highway patrols, strengthen intelligence gathering, and ensure safe transit for travelers.

Incidents like Basheerah Ojedeyi’s kidnapping have become distressingly common in Nigeria, particularly along inter-state routes. Universities and student unions have begun advising their members to avoid late-night travel and to share travel plans with trusted contacts.

Experts stress that stronger collaboration between state governments, law-enforcement agencies, and local communities is crucial to prevent similar tragedies. Beyond policy, they say the public must continue to support victims and demand accountability from those in power.

For many, Basheerah Ojedeyi’s release is more than just good news — it is a symbol of faith and unity in the face of adversity. Her ordeal united people across backgrounds, beliefs, and regions in a collective call for justice and compassion.

Today, she stands as a source of inspiration to young Nigerians, particularly women in science and medicine, proving that even in moments of darkness, hope can prevail.

Call for Lasting Security Reforms

Observers and activists have urged both the federal and state governments to treat the issue of kidnapping as a national emergency. They call for investment in community policing, modern surveillance systems, and youth empowerment programs that reduce the desperation fueling crime.

While Nigeria continues to battle insecurity, stories like Basheerah Ojedeyi’s highlight the power of solidarity. The country’s unity and determination to protect its youth remain its greatest strengths.

As she recovers and resumes her professional journey, Basheerah Ojedeyi’s experience serves as both a cautionary tale and a rallying cry — a reminder that education and safety must never be luxuries in a nation striving for peace and progress.
