The Zamfara State Police Command has reported a major breakthrough in its ongoing efforts to combat banditry, following the killing of more than 30 suspected armed bandits during an attempted invasion of Bukkuyum town in Bukkuyum Local Government Area of the state.
The attackers reportedly met strong resistance from security operatives who mobilised to defend the community, resulting in a prolonged exchange of gunfire that prevented the armed men from gaining access to the town.
The confrontation took place on October 28, 2026, when the suspected bandits allegedly advanced towards the community in an attempt to launch an attack. However, police personnel, working alongside local civil security groups, confronted the assailants and succeeded in repelling their advance.
Following the encounter, security operatives reportedly discovered more than 30 bodies believed to belong to members of the attacking group in farmlands surrounding the area.
The Police Public Relations Officer of the Zamfara State Command, DSP Yazid Abubakar, confirmed the incident in a statement released in Gusau on Saturday.
According to him, the security personnel demonstrated considerable bravery and operational discipline during the confrontation, particularly given the apparent difference in the firepower available to both sides.
He explained that the determination of the operatives prevented the attackers from overrunning Bukkuyum, thereby averting a potentially devastating security situation for residents.
Abubakar said the discovery of the bodies in nearby farmlands suggested that the suspected bandits suffered heavy losses during the encounter.
He, however, clarified that the number of casualties could not yet be conclusively established, as further verification would be necessary to determine the full extent of the losses sustained by the attackers.

The police spokesperson also explained that armed bandit groups operating in the region often make efforts to retrieve their dead and wounded members after confrontations with security forces.
This practice, according to the Command, makes it difficult for security agencies to establish the exact number of casualties immediately after an operation.
The statement said, “The discovery suggests that the attackers sustained significant casualties during the confrontation. It is noteworthy that armed bandits are known to evacuate their casualties from battle scenes. However, the actual number of casualties remains subject to further verification.”
The police described the successful defence of Bukkuyum as an important development in the security situation of the area, considering the potential consequences had the attackers succeeded in entering the community.
According to the Command, the intervention prevented possible deaths, destruction of residential and commercial properties, as well as the displacement of innocent residents who could have been forced to abandon their homes in search of safety.
The incident also highlighted the importance of cooperation between conventional security agencies and local civil security formations in responding to threats against rural communities.
In many parts of Zamfara State, residents have continued to contend with security concerns arising from armed criminal activities, including attacks on settlements, kidnapping and other forms of violence.
Such incidents have frequently disrupted farming, trading and other economic activities, particularly in communities where residents depend heavily on agriculture for their livelihoods.
Bukkuyum and other vulnerable communities therefore remain important areas of focus for security agencies seeking to prevent criminal groups from expanding their activities.
The Police Command further disclosed that preliminary security assessments indicated that sustained pressure from ongoing operations had forced some of the remaining bandits to leave the state.
Although the Command did not provide details about the specific locations to which the fleeing suspects had relocated, it maintained that security operations would continue to prevent them from regrouping or establishing new bases.
It also assured residents that the police would maintain close collaboration with other security agencies and local security organisations to strengthen surveillance and respond promptly to emerging threats.
The Command reiterated that its operations would not be limited to repelling attacks but would also involve sustained efforts to identify, track and dismantle criminal networks operating within the state.
It said the objective was to restore normalcy, protect vulnerable communities and rebuild public confidence in the ability of security agencies to safeguard lives and property.
Residents were also expected to support ongoing security efforts by providing relevant information that could assist operatives in identifying suspicious movements and tracking individuals involved in criminal activities.
The police maintained that cooperation between communities and security agencies remained essential to achieving lasting security, particularly in areas where difficult terrain and scattered settlements could create operational challenges.
The Command reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining the offensive against banditry, assuring the people of Zamfara that efforts to eliminate criminal threats and secure affected communities would continue.
