The Oyo State Government has unveiled a new welfare initiative tagged the Oyo transport allowance, aimed at easing the financial pressure faced by civil servants amid rising commuting costs.
Governor Seyi Makinde announced that eligible workers will receive ₦10,000 monthly for an initial three-month period, a move widely seen as a short-term buffer against economic strain.
The announcement was made during a stakeholder engagement and disbursement programme held at the Fashola Agribusiness Hub.

The event, organised in collaboration with First City Monument Bank and Mastercard, also highlighted broader economic support efforts targeting workers and small-scale entrepreneurs.
Explaining the rationale behind the Oyo transport allowance, the governor said the policy was designed in response to the increasing cost of transportation, which has significantly affected workers’ take-home value.
According to him, many public servants now spend a larger portion of their income on commuting, leaving little room for other essential needs.
Makinde stressed that the Oyo transport allowance is not just a financial intervention but also a productivity-driven policy.
He noted that when workers are less burdened by transport expenses, they are more likely to maintain punctuality, efficiency, and overall morale within the public service system.
He further described the measure as part of a broader safety net under the state’s SAfER initiative, which focuses on reducing the impact of inflation and economic instability on residents.
The government, he added, remains committed to implementing people-oriented policies that directly improve living conditions.
Beyond the allowance announcement, the event also featured the disbursement of funds to beneficiaries of the Youth Entrepreneurship in Agribusiness Project (YEAP).
This programme is designed to support young people venturing into agriculture and agribusiness, thereby creating employment opportunities and strengthening food production across the state.
Stakeholders present at the gathering commended the introduction of the Oyo transport allowance, describing it as both timely and practical.
Many attendees noted that transportation has become one of the most pressing challenges for workers, particularly in urban centres where fares have surged in recent months.
Economic observers believe the initiative could have a ripple effect on worker satisfaction and service delivery.
By addressing a key cost burden, the government may help stabilise workforce performance while also demonstrating responsiveness to citizens’ immediate needs.
Despite being a temporary measure, the Oyo transport allowance has sparked discussions about the need for more sustainable wage adjustments and long-term welfare reforms.
Some analysts argue that while short-term relief is necessary, structural solutions will ultimately be required to address the root causes of rising living costs.
The government has assured that implementation details will be communicated through official channels, ensuring transparency and smooth disbursement.
As the Oyo transport allowance takes effect from March, many civil servants are hopeful that the support will provide meaningful relief during this challenging economic period.
