Oyo Police arrest two suspects after recovering a suspected human skull allegedly exhumed from a cemetery, with forensic investigations now underway.
The Oyo State Police Command has intensified its efforts to tackle criminal activities with the arrest of two suspects allegedly linked to the unlawful possession of a suspected human skull.
The arrests followed a carefully coordinated intelligence-led operation involving operatives of the Nigeria Police Force and the Oyo State Security Network Agency, popularly known as Amotekun.
The operation, which was carried out after credible intelligence was received by the police, resulted in the recovery of an object believed to be a human skull.
Authorities say the exhibit has been secured for forensic examination as investigations continue to determine its origin and the motive behind the suspects’ actions.
The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Friday in Ibadan by the Police Public Relations Officer of the Oyo State Command, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka.

According to him, the operation forms part of the command’s sustained efforts to clamp down on criminal activities and individuals engaging in acts capable of threatening public peace and security across the state.
Olayinka explained that security agencies acted promptly after receiving actionable intelligence concerning a man allegedly in possession of what was believed to be a human skull.
Following the report, the Commissioner of Police, Abimbola Olugbenga, directed a joint tactical operation involving detectives and Amotekun operatives to verify the information and arrest those responsible.
During the operation, security personnel arrested Shittu Isah, said to be a resident of the Kajola area of Ijio.
Officers reportedly recovered the suspected human skull from the suspect, who was immediately taken into custody for further questioning.
According to the police, the investigation took a significant turn after the suspect was interrogated. He allegedly confessed that the object was exhumed from a Muslim burial ground located in Ijio.
Investigators believe the confession has become an important part of the ongoing inquiry as they seek to establish the full sequence of events surrounding the case.
The police further revealed that the suspect informed investigators that he did not carry out the act alone.
His statement reportedly led detectives to another individual identified as Tunde Ajibade, who was subsequently arrested.
Authorities said the second suspect is currently assisting investigators as efforts continue to uncover every aspect of the incident.
While the arrests have been made, police authorities emphasized that investigations are still ongoing.
The recovered exhibit has been preserved and will undergo forensic examination to scientifically determine whether it is indeed a human skull and to gather additional evidence that could strengthen the case.
Investigators are also working to establish the motive behind the alleged exhumation and possession of the suspected skull.
They are examining whether the act was connected to ritual-related activities, other criminal intentions, or any broader network that may have been operating within or outside the state.
However, the police have not announced any conclusions and insist that only evidence gathered during the investigation will determine the direction of the case.
The command also stated that detectives are exploring whether additional suspects were involved in the alleged offence.
Anyone found to have participated directly or indirectly in the incident will face prosecution in accordance with the law once investigations are concluded.
Cases involving the unlawful handling of human remains often attract public concern because they violate legal and cultural norms while raising questions about public safety.
Security agencies have repeatedly warned that such offences will be treated seriously, especially where there is evidence suggesting criminal intent.
The Oyo State Police Command reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and property across the state. It assured residents that every available legal and investigative tool would be deployed to ensure justice is served and to discourage similar offences in the future.
The command further urged members of the public to remain vigilant and continue supporting security agencies by providing timely and credible information.
According to the police, community cooperation remains one of the most effective ways to prevent crime, identify suspects early, and strengthen public security.
Residents were also encouraged to promptly report suspicious activities in their communities through the appropriate security channels, noting that early intervention often plays a crucial role in preventing criminal acts before they escalate.
As forensic experts begin examining the recovered exhibit and investigators continue gathering evidence, the police say updates will be provided whenever necessary.
Until then, both suspects remain in custody while the investigation progresses in line with established legal procedures.
