Oriyomi reveals divine reason for contesting Oyo governorship election

Oriyomi Hamzat cites divine calling and people’s support as reasons for contesting Oyo State governorship, promising service above politics.

Dr. Oriyomi Hamzat, renowned broadcaster and Chairman of Agidigbo FM in Nigeria and the United Kingdom, has officially declared his intention to contest the Oyo State governorship in the 2027 elections under the Accord Party.

In a rally at Liberty Stadium, Ibadan, Oriyomi explained that his decision to run stems not from political ambition or personal gain but from a deep sense of divine guidance and a commitment to serve the people of Oyo.

Speaking on his program on Agidigbo FM the day after the rally, Oriyomi detailed the spiritual and personal reflections that led to his decision.

He said that although he had long been involved in politics by supporting others, he had never planned to seek elective office himself.

“I never imagined myself in a political position, but God’s guidance has shown me that this is the time to step forward,” Oriyomi explained.

He highlighted that his decision was influenced by both encouragement and caution from his advisers.

Some advised him against contesting, citing the challenges and risks of politics, while others urged him to use his platform and influence to make a difference.

“I listened to everyone — those who encouraged me and those who cautioned me. I laid it all before God, and He approved my contesting,” Oriyomi said.

Emphasizing the spiritual aspect of his motivation, Oriyomi said, “This is not about pleasing people or seeking recognition.

“I cannot disobey God just to satisfy opinions. I believe I have been called to serve the people of Oyo, and I must follow that calling.”

He appealed for understanding from anyone who might feel disappointed or opposed to his decision, urging them to forgive and support him in his pursuit of the governorship.

Oriyomi made it clear that his campaign is not built on wealth, political connections, or government backing.

“I do not have money, influence, or the support of those in power. What I have is God and the trust of the people. That is what matters,” he said.

By stressing this point, Oriyomi positioned himself as a candidate motivated by service rather than traditional political advantage.

In his explanation of why he is contesting, Oriyomi also addressed the widespread perception of corruption in politics.

He stated, “I do not want to be like those who use politics for personal gain. I want to serve the people sincerely, and ensure that governance reflects their needs and aspirations.”

His decision to contest is therefore grounded in a desire to model integrity, accountability, and transparency in Oyo State politics.

Oriyomi further dismissed doubts about his chances or fears of political sabotage.

“We have moved past the question of whether I will be rigged out or lose. My focus is on service, on earning the support of the people, and on doing what is right,” he said.

This statement underscores his belief that moral purpose and public trust are stronger foundations than fear or political maneuvering.

At the Liberty Stadium rally, Oriyomi described the moment of his decision as a “divine calling,” explaining that it was only through careful prayer and reflection that he felt confident to step into political leadership.

“I have always supported others in politics, but now, I feel compelled to take responsibility myself. This calling is beyond personal ambition; it is about service,” he said.

Oriyomi also outlined his vision for why he wants to govern Oyo State. His focus includes improving education, creating employment opportunities, strengthening healthcare, and promoting good governance.

“I want every citizen of Oyo to feel represented and valued. Governance should not serve a few; it should serve the people,” he said.

By connecting his motivations to tangible goals, Oriyomi reinforced that his reason for contesting is rooted in service rather than self-interest.

Observers note that Oriyomi’s candidacy is unusual in Nigerian politics because it combines moral conviction, public trust, and a media-driven platform.

By sharing his motivations openly, Oriyomi hopes to inspire citizens to engage actively in governance and to support leaders who prioritize service over politics.
