Ogun River Flood Alert warns riverbank and wetland residents to prepare for overflow from October 20 to November 3 to prevent loss of lives and property.
The Ogun State Government has issued a critical Ogun River Flood Alert, warning residents in riverbank and wetland areas to take urgent precautions.
The alert covers the period from October 20 to November 3, when heavy rains combined with controlled water releases from Oyan Dam are expected to cause the Ogun River to overflow.
Communities at risk include Akute, Alagbole, Isheri, Magboro, Makogi, Orimerunmu, Iro, Kajola, and parts of Abeokuta, particularly Lafenwa, Enugada, Adedotun, Iberekodo, Akin-Olugbade, and Ago-Odo.
Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, explained that the anticipated overflow is a direct result of controlled releases from Oyan Dam.
He noted that increased rainfall in northern regions has significantly raised water inflow into the dam, necessitating water discharge to prevent dam overflow.
The resulting rise in river levels has prompted the issuance of this Ogun River Flood Alert to safeguard lives and property.

Residents along the riverbank are strongly advised to avoid the river during this period. Those living in wetland areas are encouraged to relocate temporarily to higher ground or elevate their homes where possible.
“The overflow is inevitable, and these measures are vital to prevent loss of lives and property,” Oresanya emphasized.
The state government has been proactive in mitigating flood risks through dredging and opening additional tributaries of the Ogun River.
This work, carried out in collaboration with the Ogun-Osun River Basin Authority—the custodians of Oyan Dam—aims to ease water flow and reduce the impact on vulnerable communities.
The Authority also ensures controlled water releases throughout the year to manage river levels effectively.
Authorities have assured residents that water levels are expected to recede approximately ten days after the peak overflow. Fish farmers are particularly advised to harvest their stocks promptly to prevent losses caused by rising water levels.
The government’s proactive warnings are part of ongoing efforts to reduce the human and economic toll of seasonal flooding.
Early warning and preparedness are critical to mitigating flood risks in Ogun State. Historically, river overflow has caused significant disruption, property damage, and displacement.
By issuing the Ogun River Flood Alert, authorities aim to give residents sufficient time to protect lives, homes, and businesses. Local governments are coordinating with emergency response teams to assist high-risk communities during peak flooding.
Community leaders are encouraged to share information on the alert and help residents implement safety measures.
This includes relocating families from low-lying areas, safeguarding valuables, and ensuring that essential supplies are ready. Public awareness and immediate action are key to minimizing the effects of flooding.
Long-term flood management strategies remain essential, including proper urban planning, reinforcement of riverbanks, and regular maintenance of drainage systems.
The alert serves as a reminder of the vulnerability of riverbank and wetland communities and highlights the importance of sustainable infrastructure investment to mitigate flood impact.
Residents should stay informed through official government channels and local media updates on water levels and emergency instructions.
Collaboration between the Ogun State Government and the Ogun-Osun River Basin Authority exemplifies a proactive approach to flood management and disaster preparedness.
The Ogun River Flood Alert is a vital reminder of the importance of early preparedness. By following government guidance, residents can protect their families, safeguard property, and reduce the overall impact of the flood.
Overflowing rivers can also lead to soil erosion, water contamination, and damage to crops, emphasizing the need for timely action.
Emergency response teams remain on standby to assist residents if needed. Coordination with local authorities ensures that evacuation and relief operations can be executed efficiently.
By adhering to safety instructions and preparing in advance, communities can navigate the challenges posed by the Ogun River Flood Alert and prevent unnecessary loss.
