Outrage after #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest arrests in Abuja

Outrage grows as #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest arrests in Abuja spark condemnation; human rights groups demand immediate release of peaceful protesters.

At least 13 participants in the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest arrests in Abuja have been detained and taken to the notorious SARS Abattoir facility, infamous for torture and human rights abuses.

The arrests have provoked widespread outrage among activists, human rights groups, and citizens, who condemn the actions as a clear violation of constitutional rights.

Human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore revealed the arrests on X, condemning the order as “illegal and despicable.”

Those detained include Nnamdi Kanu’s lead counsel, Barrister Aloy Ejimakor, Kanu’s brother Fineboy Kanu, Barrister Okere, and ten others. Their alleged “crime” was simply exercising their constitutional right to a peaceful protest.

Sowore stated, “The despicable and illegal Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered the arrest and detention of 13 peaceful protesters who participated in today’s #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest arrests Abuja event. Among them are Nnamdi Kanu’s lead lawyer, @AloyEjimakor, his brother Fineboy Kanu, Barrister Okere, and ten others whose only offense was standing for justice and freedom.”

The detainees were reportedly taken to the SARS Abattoir, a facility long associated with human rights violations, unlawful detentions, and inhumane treatment.

Activists argue that such facilities should not be used to suppress lawful protests, warning that this undermines the rule of law and democratic freedoms.

The #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest arrests Abuja event was organized to demand the immediate release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Kanu remains in prolonged detention despite several court rulings ordering his release, fueling public outrage over continued disregard for judicial decisions.

Legal experts have criticized the arrests as unconstitutional. Barrister Ejimakor’s detention, in particular, raises questions about the impartiality of law enforcement and respect for citizens’ rights.

“Targeting individuals for participating in peaceful protests violates fundamental freedoms and sets a dangerous precedent,” said a legal analyst.

Family members of the detainees have expressed grave concerns over their safety in the SARS Abattoir.

“These are peaceful citizens exercising their democratic rights, yet they are treated as criminals,” a relative said.

The #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest arrests Abuja crackdown has reignited public debate about civil liberties and police accountability. Social media campaigns, including #FreeNnamdiKanuNow and #JusticeForProtesters, have amplified calls for transparency and the immediate release of the detained individuals.

Political commentators warn that using intimidation and arrests against peaceful protesters may escalate tensions, eroding public trust in law enforcement institutions.

Human rights organizations continue to demand urgent reforms to ensure that peaceful protest remains a protected constitutional right in Nigeria.

The #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest arrests Abuja episode underscores ongoing concerns about human rights, civil liberties, and police accountability.

Activists call for the immediate and unconditional release of all detained protesters and urge authorities to end the use of facilities like the SARS Abattoir for punishing lawful dissent.
