A Norwegian court has sentenced Doctor Arne Bye to 21 years in prison for committing 70 counts of rape and sexual assault against dozens of women over nearly two decades. Bye, a former general practitioner, was found guilty of abusing his position to conduct inappropriate medical examinations on his patients in the small town of Frosta.
The court’s decision was based on allegations spanning 18 years, involving 94 women who testified against Bye. Judge Espen Haug described the case as “very serious” and Bye’s actions as “absolutely unacceptable”. “The defendant’s actions happened in a place and setting where people are supposed to feel safe,” Judge Haug said. “His actions have undermined public trust in the health service as well as doctors in general.”
Bye’s crimes included non-consensual touching and digital penetration without medical justification, which constitutes rape under Norwegian law. He was also shown to have used non-medical equipment, such as a deodorant, during examinations without justification. Bye secretly installed a camera in his office, and police uncovered the scale of his offenses after reviewing hundreds of hours of footage.
In addition to his prison sentence, Bye was banned from practicing medicine indefinitely and ordered to pay compensation to his victims. The defense had sought a lower sentence of around 17-18 years, recognizing only 20 of the rapes. Prosecutors expressed satisfaction with the verdict and will review the outcome before considering any appeals.
