BREAKING:North Cyprus ferry disaster leaves eight dead, 17 missing

The North Cyprus ferry disaster has left at least eight people dead and 17 missing after a passenger vessel carrying hundreds capsized shortly after departing Kyrenia for Turkey.

The privately owned FILOJET ferry was carrying 259 passengers and eight crew members when authorities said it began taking on water shortly after leaving the northern Cyprus coast.

The vessel had departed Kyrenia at approximately 12:30 p.m. and was travelling towards Tasucu, a Turkish port across the eastern Mediterranean, when the emergency suddenly unfolded.

Survivors described terrifying moments aboard the vessel, saying the ferry began moving erratically and repeatedly slamming against the sea before suffering catastrophic structural damage.

One survivor, Efe Multici, recalled how the two-hulled passenger vessel repeatedly lifted from the water before crashing back down violently, causing severe shaking and widespread panic.

He said the situation worsened dramatically when the ferry suddenly leapt into the air before crashing down, causing part of its front section to burst open.

Water reportedly began rushing into the damaged vessel through the broken section, leaving passengers terrified as they realised the ferry was rapidly losing stability offshore.

Within minutes, the vessel overturned, throwing passengers into a desperate struggle for survival as some managed to reach the hull while others awaited rescue assistance.

🚨 North Cyprus Ferry Disaster Triggers Massive Rescue Operation

Dramatic footage from the scene showed survivors wearing red life jackets while sitting and standing on the overturned ferry as emergency teams rushed towards them.

Turkish Cypriot authorities immediately launched a Mediterranean rescue operation involving coastguard vessels, civilian boats and helicopters, supported by emergency teams deployed from neighbouring Turkey.

Four Turkish Cypriot coastguard vessels and one civilian passenger boat joined the response alongside five Turkish coastguard vessels and two helicopters searching surrounding waters.

Rescuers successfully brought several survivors ashore, but authorities later confirmed eight deaths while continuing an intensive search for the 17 missing ferry passengers.

The Kyrenia ferry tragedy occurred close to one of northern Cyprus’s busiest coastal destinations, where regular maritime services connect the Turkish Cypriot territory with ports in Turkey.

Emergency workers faced an increasingly difficult situation after the ferry eventually sank completely, settling on the seabed at an estimated depth of 514 metres.

Authorities said the considerable underwater depth would complicate efforts to inspect the wreckage, particularly amid fears that some missing ferry passengers could remain trapped inside.

Turkish divers were expected to assist specialist rescue teams as authorities explored available technology capable of detecting survivors or locating victims within the submerged passenger vessel.

Search Teams Face Dangerous Underwater Challenge

Northern Cyprus leader Tufan Erhurman expressed deep sadness over the North Cyprus ferry disaster and acknowledged that reaching anyone trapped inside would present enormous difficulties.

He said rescue authorities were examining alternative technologies to reach possible survivors, stressing that the search would continue despite the complicated conditions surrounding the sunken vessel.

The ferry capsizes off Cyprus tragedy has also prompted an immediate investigation into what caused the vessel to begin taking water shortly after departure.

Survivor testimony has become central to the early investigation, particularly accounts describing violent movements and repeated impacts between the vessel and the sea.

Multici said passengers experienced several minutes of violent shaking before the ferry suddenly rose into the air and crashed heavily onto the water.

According to his account, the front left section of the vessel burst open during the final impact, allowing water to pour rapidly inside.

Authorities subsequently detained the ferry captain and seven crew members for questioning as investigators began gathering evidence surrounding the circumstances of the deadly maritime accident.

Investigation Begins Into Cyprus Ferry Capsize

Investigators are expected to examine the structural condition of the vessel, possible mechanical failures and whether operational decisions contributed to the North Cyprus ferry disaster.

Weather conditions may also be reviewed after Cyprus experienced fierce storms on Saturday, although authorities said Sunday’s conditions were considered suitable for normal maritime travel.

The previous day’s rough weather had already caused another maritime accident after one person died when a sailboat crashed into rocks along Cyprus’s coastline.

However, officials have not established any direct connection between Saturday’s storms and Sunday’s ferry capsizing, leaving investigators searching for more conclusive explanations.

The disaster has sent shockwaves across Cyprus and Turkey because ferry services between northern Cyprus and the Turkish mainland remain important transportation links.

Northern Cyprus operates as a breakaway Turkish Cypriot administration recognised internationally only by Turkey, which provides substantial economic and military support to the territory.

The Kyrenia to Tasucu route is among several daily maritime connections used by residents, visitors and tourists travelling between northern Cyprus and Turkey.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed condolences to families affected by the tragedy and pledged continued support for the Mediterranean rescue operation.

Erdogan said authorities would continue searching without interruption and expressed hope that emergency workers could still receive positive news concerning those currently listed as missing.

Expressions of sympathy and offers of assistance also came from Cyprus’s internationally recognised government despite the political divisions that have separated the island for decades.

Cyprus has remained divided between Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities since 1974, when Turkey intervened militarily following a Greek-inspired coup on the island.

Families Await News As Search Continues

Families of the missing ferry passengers are now enduring an agonising wait as rescuers continue searching the sea and prepare specialist underwater operations.

The North Cyprus ferry disaster has created a race against time, with emergency workers hoping that anyone still alive can be located quickly.

Specialist divers and underwater teams are expected to play increasingly important roles as authorities attempt to inspect the wreckage resting deep beneath Mediterranean waters.

Investigators will also attempt to determine why the ferry began taking on water so soon after leaving Kyrenia and whether preventable failures occurred.

For rescue teams, the immediate priority remains locating the 17 missing people while providing medical support and assistance to survivors rescued from the sea.

The ferry cap sizes off Cyprus tragedy has become one of the region’s most devastating recent maritime emergencies, prompting widespread grief across communities in Cyprus and Turkey.

Authorities have promised a comprehensive investigation as the Mediterranean rescue operation continues, with hopes remaining that search teams can still account for everyone missing.

The North Cyprus ferry disaster has once again highlighted the devastating consequences of maritime emergencies and the extraordinary dangers faced by passengers when vessels encounter catastrophic failures.
