NEMIS remains secure, says the Education Ministry, dismissing cyberattack reports and explaining that a technical SSL certificate issue caused alerts.
The Federal Ministry of Education has firmly rejected reports suggesting that the Nigeria Education Management Information System (NEMIS) was targeted by hackers, insisting that the country’s central education data platform remains secure and fully operational.
The clarification comes after reports emerged claiming that the Federal Government’s education database may have suffered a cyberattack.
The ministry, however, described the reports as misleading and inaccurate, stressing that no breach occurred and that sensitive information stored within the system was never at risk.
In an official statement released on Tuesday by the Director of Press and Public Relations, Folasade Boriowo, the ministry sought to reassure stakeholders across the education sector that the integrity of the platform remains intact.
According to the statement, investigations carried out by technical experts confirmed that the issue experienced by some users was not related to hacking or any form of unauthorized intrusion.

The ministry emphasized that NEMIS continues to operate securely and that all educational records contained within the system remain protected.
Technical glitch mistaken for security breach
According to the ministry, the confusion arose after some users encountered browser warning messages while attempting to access the platform.
Such warnings often raise concerns about online security, leading some observers to speculate that the system may have been compromised.
However, officials explained that the warning messages were triggered by a Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) certificate configuration issue rather than a cyberattack.
SSL certificates play a critical role in securing communications between websites and users by encrypting data and verifying the authenticity of online platforms.
The ministry clarified that the SSL-related problem originated at the hosting level and temporarily affected the platform’s secure connection certification.
While the issue generated cautionary alerts on users’ browsers, it did not provide any avenue for hackers to gain access to the system.
Authorities stressed that the incident was purely technical and did not result in unauthorized access, loss of information, data manipulation, or exposure of confidential records.
“The platform was not hacked, breached, or subjected to any cyberattack,” the ministry stated, adding that all information stored on NEMIS remained safe throughout the incident.
Swift response restored full operations
Education officials disclosed that once the issue was identified, the ministry’s technical team immediately engaged the hosting service provider to diagnose and resolve the problem.
The collaborative effort resulted in a rapid restoration of normal services, ensuring minimal disruption for users who rely on the platform for educational planning, administration, and data management.
The ministry said the affected configuration was corrected promptly and that normal access to NEMIS was restored shortly afterward. Authorized users can now access the platform without encountering the earlier warning messages.
