The Senate Committee on the North Central Development Commission (NCDC) has formally approved the Commission’s N140 billion budget proposal for 2026, signaling a renewed commitment to boosting North Central development across the region.
The approval came after a detailed budget defence by the NCDC’s leadership at the Senate Building in Abuja.

Dr. Cyril Yiltsen Tsenyil, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the NCDC, presented the budget before the Committee, highlighting the Commission’s strategic plans for the coming year.
According to Mr. James Uloko, Director of Corporate Services at the NCDC, about 86 percent of the proposed budget is earmarked for capital projects, while the remaining funds are allocated to personnel and operational costs.
This allocation reflects the Commission’s determination to prioritize tangible development projects that directly impact communities in the North Central zone.
Dr. Tsenyil emphasized that the Commission is committed to consolidating its operations and laying a solid foundation for sustainable North Central development.
“Our goal is to implement strategic projects that improve the lives of the people, create economic opportunities, and foster lasting growth across the region,” he stated during the budget presentation.
The Senate Committee, chaired by Titus Zam, expressed confidence that the budget, if properly executed, would significantly advance the region’s development agenda.
The Chairman noted that the heavy capital component of the budget would allow the NCDC to focus on key sectors, including infrastructure, agriculture, community empowerment, and economic growth—areas widely regarded as essential to fostering North Central development.
Several senators who scrutinized the budget proposals praised the NCDC’s clear focus on projects that unlock the region’s vast economic potential.
They acknowledged the importance of the Commission’s approach in designing initiatives that directly respond to the developmental needs of local communities.
The senators also highlighted the need for strategic interventions to address the region’s security challenges, particularly in supporting displaced persons and mitigating disruptions to economic activities.
Committee members further stressed the importance of robust stakeholder engagement in ensuring the success of the Commission’s initiatives.
They emphasized that involving local communities, traditional leaders, and civil society organizations in planning and implementation is critical to sustaining momentum for North Central development.
According to the senators, successful collaboration with stakeholders will help ensure that projects meet the real needs of the people and promote widespread acceptance and participation.
In addition to these recommendations, the Committee encouraged the NCDC to adopt monitoring and evaluation mechanisms to track the impact of its projects.
The focus on accountability and transparency, they noted, would ensure that public resources are effectively utilized to promote measurable outcomes in North Central development.
The approval of the budget also comes at a time when the region is facing numerous developmental challenges, including limited infrastructure, low agricultural productivity, and high unemployment.
By directing the bulk of its resources toward capital expenditure, the NCDC aims to address these critical issues and create sustainable opportunities for residents.
Upon conclusion of the budget defence, the Committee moved into a closed-door session for further deliberations.
After careful consideration, the senators reconvened and officially approved the NCDC’s 2026 budget estimates.
This endorsement marks a significant step forward in the implementation of development programs that are expected to stimulate economic growth, improve living standards, and strengthen the socio-economic fabric of the North Central states.
Dr. Tsenyil expressed gratitude to the Senate Committee for its thorough review and approval of the budget.
He reiterated the Commission’s commitment to ensuring that every project funded under the 2026 budget contributes meaningfully to North Central development.
“We are determined to ensure that our interventions create lasting impact and improve the quality of life for the people of the region,” he said.
