Mohammed Idris denies Niger governorship ambition, suspends aide over write-up

Minister Mohammed Idris has denied claims linking him to the Niger governorship race, disowned a viral write-up, and suspended an aide to curb political distractions.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has publicly dismissed claims suggesting that he is positioning himself to contest the Niger State governorship election in 2027, describing such reports as misleading, unauthorized, and capable of diverting attention from his current national responsibilities.

The Minister’s reaction followed the emergence of a controversial write-up titled “Malagi 2027,” authored by one of his aides, Sa’idu Enagi.

The article speculated on political alignments and possible contenders ahead of the next gubernatorial election in Niger State, sparking widespread interpretation that the Minister may be nurturing political ambitions at the state level.

In a statement released through his media aide, Rabin Ibrahim, Mohammed Idris made it clear that the publication did not reflect his views, intentions, or political plans.

He emphasized that the write-up was produced without his knowledge or consent and should therefore be completely disregarded by the public.

According to the Minister, his present focus remains firmly on his role as Information Minister, where he is tasked with shaping national communication strategy, coordinating public information, and promoting government policies across the country.

He stressed that the demands of his office leave no room for partisan political engagement or distractions related to future elections.

“The Honourable Minister is fully committed to the responsibilities of superintending the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation,” the statement said.

“He has neither directed nor approved any publication suggesting interest in the Niger governorship or any elective office in 2027.”

To demonstrate the seriousness with which the matter is being treated, Mohammed Idris ordered an immediate investigation into how the article was conceived and circulated.

As an initial disciplinary step, the aide responsible for the write-up, Sa’idu Enagi, was issued a letter of suspension with immediate effect, pending the outcome of the inquiry.

The Minister’s office described the suspension as a necessary action to uphold professionalism, internal discipline, and clear boundaries between personal opinions and official government communication.

It noted that aides and public officials must exercise restraint, especially when expressing views that could be misinterpreted as official policy or endorsement.

Beyond disowning the publication, the statement also addressed the broader political implications of the speculation.

It highlighted the cordial working relationship between Mohammed Idris and the Governor of Niger State, Mohammed Umaru Bago, describing it as one built on mutual respect and a shared vision for the development of the state.

The Minister’s camp warned that premature discussions and political conjecture about the 2027 Niger governorship could be counterproductive and potentially harmful to ongoing collaborative efforts between the federal government and the Niger State administration.

“It is important to note that the Honourable Minister and His Excellency, Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago, enjoy a positive and mutually beneficial relationship,” the statement added.

“Speculations about future elections at this time do not serve the collective interest of Niger State.”

Observers note that the swift response from Mohammed Idris reflects growing sensitivity within government circles about unauthorized political messaging, particularly as early alignments ahead of the 2027 general elections begin to surface across the country.

Political analysts also point out that public officials occupying sensitive federal positions are often cautious about being linked to state-level political contests, as such perceptions could undermine their effectiveness or raise questions about divided loyalties.

For now, the Minister has reiterated his commitment to national service, urging the public and political commentators to focus on governance rather than conjecture.

He called on aides, supporters, and associates to act responsibly and avoid actions that could generate unnecessary controversy.

By firmly distancing himself from the Niger governorship narrative, Mohammed Idris has sought to draw a clear line between official duties and political speculation, reinforcing his stance that the time for electoral politics is not now, especially for those entrusted with key national responsibilities.
