Two people have died after a machete and knife attack at an IMAX cinema in Lekki, Lagos, with police investigating the deadly confrontation.

Two people have been confirmed dead following a violent incident at an IMAX cinema in the Lekki area of Lagos State, after a man reportedly armed with a machete and knife caused panic among customers and workers on Friday night, August 29.

The incident reportedly began when the unidentified man arrived at the cinema and attempted to gain entry into the premises. Security personnel at the facility, however, stopped him from proceeding inside.

What initially appeared to be an attempt to prevent a potentially dangerous individual from entering the crowded entertainment centre reportedly escalated into a deadly confrontation.

According to eyewitness accounts, the man became aggressive after security guards prevented him from accessing the cinema.

Witnesses also claimed that he appeared to be under the influence of drugs, although this aspect of the incident has not been independently established by the police.

The situation reportedly generated confusion and fear among people at the facility, as the confrontation between the suspect and security personnel intensified.

In the course of the incident, one of the security guards was allegedly stabbed to death, while another security personnel sustained injuries.

The Lagos State Police Command confirmed the deaths, saying the suspected attacker also died after he was reportedly mobbed at the scene.

Police spokesperson SP Adebisi Abimbola disclosed that two people had been confirmed dead but said several aspects of the incident remained unclear and were still being investigated.

“Two people have been confirmed dead,” Abimbola said.

She explained that the police were working to establish exactly what happened at the cinema and determine the sequence of events that resulted in the deaths.

The identity of the alleged attacker has not yet been established by the authorities. Police are also examining the circumstances surrounding his death after he was reportedly attacked by a mob following the confrontation.

The development means investigators are now faced with the task of piecing together events from the moment the suspect arrived at the cinema to the confrontation with security personnel and the subsequent violence.

As part of the investigation, the police have taken the Chief Security Officer of the cinema into custody.

The reason for the detention was not fully disclosed by the police spokesperson, but the development forms part of the ongoing effort to determine how the incident unfolded and assess the actions taken by security personnel before, during and after the confrontation.

Investigators are also expected to examine surveillance recordings from the facility.

Abimbola said the police were making efforts to obtain and review the CCTV footage captured around the cinema premises.

The recordings could provide investigators with a clearer picture of the incident and help establish facts that may not be immediately available from eyewitness accounts.

The footage may also help the police determine the movements of the suspect before the confrontation, how security personnel responded to him and what happened immediately after the alleged stabbing.

It could further assist investigators in determining whether anyone else participated in the violence that followed the initial confrontation.

While the police have confirmed the deaths, they have not released the identities of the two deceased persons.

The condition of the security personnel who was reportedly injured during the incident has also not been made public.

Authorities have similarly not provided further details about the weapon reportedly used during the attack or explained how the suspect came to be carrying a machete and knife when he arrived at the cinema.

The incident has raised fresh questions about security at entertainment venues, particularly facilities that regularly attract large crowds.

Cinemas, shopping centres, recreational facilities and other public venues depend heavily on security personnel to monitor people entering their premises and respond quickly when potential threats are identified.

The Lekki incident has therefore drawn attention to the challenges security officers may face when confronted by individuals behaving violently or unpredictably.

However, the circumstances surrounding Friday night’s incident remain subject to the outcome of the police investigation.

The authorities are expected to rely on eyewitness statements, CCTV recordings and other available evidence to reconstruct what happened and determine whether any security lapses contributed to the escalation.

The police have also not indicated whether anyone else has been arrested in connection with the incident apart from the detention of the cinema’s Chief Security Officer.

As investigations continue, the Command is expected to provide further information when key facts have been established.

For now, the two confirmed deaths remain the major outcome of the incident, with one reportedly involving a security guard who was allegedly stabbed during the confrontation and the other involving the unidentified man said to have carried out the attack.

The police said their investigation would cover the circumstances surrounding both deaths and the events that led to them.

Authorities have assured that the relevant circumstances will be examined as efforts continue to establish a complete account of the incident at the Lekki cinema.

The incident has also left questions about how the confrontation escalated so rapidly and whether it could have been contained without further loss of life.

Until investigators complete their work, details surrounding the suspect’s motive, his identity, the circumstances of his death and the precise chain of events leading to the two fatalities remain unclear.
