The Lagos State Government has introduced a new directive requiring all businesses operating within the hospitality sector—including hotels, event centres, lounges, and nightclubs—to secure formal approvals from both the Lagos State Parking Authority (LASPA) and the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).
This move is part of a broader effort to improve traffic flow and ensure proper parking management across the state.
This announcement was contained in a joint statement issued by Adebisi Adelabu, General Manager of LASPA, and Bakare-Oki Olalekan, General Manager of LASTMA, following a strategic meeting held at the LASPA headquarters on Thursday, August 7.
According to the statement, the directive was prompted by the recurring problems of indiscriminate parking and severe traffic congestion commonly associated with hospitality establishments. These issues, the agencies noted, have had a persistent negative impact on traffic movement, public safety, and overall urban orderliness in the state.
The statement stressed that the collaboration between LASPA and LASTMA is critical to the successful implementation of Lagos State’s comprehensive traffic and transport management policies.
While LASPA is tasked with the regulation and administration of parking facilities, LASTMA is primarily responsible for traffic control and enforcement. The agencies, although operating with distinct mandates, will work in synergy under the supervision of the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation.
Business owners in the hospitality industry have been urged to register their facilities and obtain all necessary permits in line with the state’s parking and traffic regulations.
The government has made it clear that non-compliance with these requirements will attract strict penalties, including prosecution in accordance with the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018.
Ultimately, the state government hopes that this renewed enforcement measure will foster a safer, more efficient, and better-organised transportation environment for all road users in Lagos.
