Six people died after a gas truck exploded near an Army checkpoint on the Abuja-Lokoja Highway in Kogi, destroying multiple trucks in a devastating fire.

A tragic explosion involving a truck transporting gas cylinders has left at least six people dead after a massive fire engulfed several heavy-duty vehicles along the Abuja-Lokoja Federal Highway in Kogi State.

The fatal incident occurred on Tuesday night near an Army checkpoint within the Chikara Division, a section of the highway known for heavy vehicular movement linking Nigeria’s North and the Federal Capital Territory.

The explosion caused panic among motorists and residents as flames and thick smoke billowed into the night sky, forcing many road users to flee for safety.

According to available information, the truck carrying gas cylinders exploded shortly before reaching the military checkpoint.

The powerful blast immediately ignited a fire that spread rapidly to nearby trucks, leaving little opportunity for those trapped inside the affected vehicles to escape.

Security analyst Zagazola Makama disclosed that the driver of the gas-laden truck and his assistant were among the first victims of the explosion. The intensity of the fire reportedly consumed the truck within minutes, killing both men.

The inferno did not stop there. Three additional trucks parked or travelling close to the gas vehicle were also caught in the flames.

Their drivers and motor boys were unable to escape the raging fire, bringing the total number of confirmed fatalities to six.

The affected trucks were identified as vehicles registered in Jigawa State, Lagos State and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

All four trucks involved in the incident were extensively damaged, with some reduced to twisted metal after the blaze.

Emergency response agencies moved quickly to the scene following reports of the explosion.

Personnel of the Nigeria Police Force, officers from the Motor Traffic Division (MTD), and officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) coordinated rescue efforts, secured the area and managed traffic to prevent additional casualties.

Responders also worked to extinguish the fire before it could spread further to other vehicles or nearby structures.

Due to the intensity of the blaze and the highly flammable nature of the cargo, rescue operations were carried out with extreme caution.

After the fire was brought under control, recovery teams evacuated the remains of the victims to the General Hospital in Abaji for identification and other necessary procedures.

The burnt trucks were later removed from the highway to restore normal traffic flow on the busy interstate route, which serves thousands of commuters and commercial transport operators daily.

Although authorities have not yet issued an official statement detailing the exact cause of the explosion, preliminary reports indicate that the blast occurred while the truck was approaching the Army checkpoint.

Investigators are expected to determine whether mechanical failure, poor handling of the gas cylinders or another factor contributed to the disaster.

The incident has renewed concerns about the transportation of hazardous materials on Nigerian highways.

Experts have repeatedly called for stricter enforcement of safety regulations governing vehicles carrying petroleum products, cooking gas and other highly combustible substances.

Road safety advocates have also stressed the importance of regular vehicle inspections, proper maintenance of tankers and gas trucks, and improved emergency preparedness along major highways to minimise casualties whenever such accidents occur.

Gas truck explosions have become a recurring safety challenge in different parts of Nigeria, often resulting in loss of lives, destruction of property and prolonged traffic disruption.

Many observers believe stronger regulatory oversight and stricter compliance with transport safety standards are necessary to reduce the frequency of such tragedies.

As investigations continue, sympathies have poured in for the families of the victims who lost their lives in the devastating incident.

The explosion serves as another painful reminder of the dangers associated with transporting flammable materials and the need for continuous improvements in road safety across the country.

Authorities are expected to release further updates as investigations progress and additional details become available.
