Joshua returns to training for mental recovery after fatal Nigeria crash

Joshua returns to training for mental recovery after fatal Nigeria crash marks a quiet but significant step forward for the former world heavyweight champion following a tragic road accident that claimed the lives of two close associates.

The incident occurred on December 29, when Joshua was travelling as a passenger in a Lexus SUV that struck a stationary truck on the busy Lagos/Ibadan highway.

Two members of Joshua’s backroom team, Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami, were killed in the crash, sending shockwaves through the boxer’s inner circle and the wider boxing community.

Joshua escaped with minor physical injuries, but those close to him say the emotional and psychological impact has been severe.

The decision to return to training has been  confirmed by sources who revealed the boxer has resumed light gym activity focused on mental resilience rather than physical intensity.

According to people familiar with the situation, the sessions are part of what has been described as “mental strength therapy,” designed to help Joshua process trauma and grief.

The former heavyweight champion is not engaging in sparring or heavy conditioning and has deliberately avoided any talk of upcoming fights.

“Anthony is taking things day by day,” a source close to the boxer said. “Right now, the priority is his mental well-being, not boxing schedules.”

Joshua has remained largely out of the public spotlight since the crash, limiting media appearances and social media activity.

He has instead focused on supporting the families of Ayodele and Ghami, both of whom had worked closely with him across several training camps and international bouts.

Joshua returns to training for mental recovery after fatal Nigeria crash reflects the role the gym has long played in his life beyond competition.

Those close to the boxer say the training environment provides structure, familiarity, and a sense of calm during an otherwise overwhelming period.

“Training has always been where Anthony finds balance,” another source said. “Being back there helps him cope without having to explain how he feels.”

The crash has also reignited conversations within boxing about the emotional pressures elite athletes face away from the ring.

Mental health professionals note that returning to controlled physical routines can be beneficial after traumatic events when done gradually and under supervision.

Joshua has yet to issue a detailed public statement about the incident, opting instead for privacy and reflection.
In a brief earlier message, he thanked fans for their support and asked for respect for the families mourning their loved ones.

The return to training after the  fatal Nigeria crash has drawn widespread support from fellow boxers, promoters, and fans.

Promoter Eddie Hearn previously indicated that any future fight plans would depend entirely on Joshua’s mental readiness.

“This is bigger than boxing,” Hearn said. “No timeline matters more than his well-being.”

Joshua, a two-time world heavyweight champion, has rebuilt his career before after professional setbacks inside the ring.

Those experiences are believed to have strengthened the mental discipline he is now relying on during this personal loss.

The mental recovery after fatal Nigeria crash stands as a reminder that recovery in sport often begins far from the spotlight.

For now, there is no confirmed return date to competitive action, and those around Joshua insist patience remains essential.
